Iridium Communications

Iridium runs one of the few truly global satellite communications networks, a constellation of 66 active satellites in low Earth orbit, with more in reserve, that gives it something most satellite operators cannot claim: pole-to-pole coverage with no gaps, since the satellites talk to each other directly rather than routing everything back through a single regional ground station. The company's history is a genuine turnaround story. The original Iridium system launched in the late 1990s, went bankrupt within a year of commercial service due to a mix of high handset costs and limited demand, and was rescued out of bankruptcy in 2000 for a fraction of what it cost to build. The company spent the following two decades finding a real market for that infrastructure, and then rebuilt the entire constellation from the ground up. The Iridium NEXT program replaced all 66 operational satellites between 2017 and 2019 across eight SpaceX Falcon 9 launches, one of the largest satellite replacement efforts ever completed on schedule and budget.

That second-generation network is what the company sells against today, and government and defense customers are a substantial part of its business. The centerpiece of that relationship is the Enhanced Mobile Satellite Services contract, a long-running arrangement that gives the entire U.S. Department of Defense unlimited global satellite airtime across the network, a structure unusual in the industry where most government satellite deals are metered by usage. In December 2025, Iridium was awarded a five-year, up to 85.8 million dollar contract from the U.S. Space Force's Space Systems Command to modernize the EMSS ground infrastructure, including its service center, technical support center, and dedicated defense ground station, work aimed at improving resilience and cybersecurity as much as raw capacity. On the product side, Iridium Certus is the company's newer broadband service tier, built to keep working in what the industry calls denied, degraded, intermittent, or limited environments, delivering voice, data, and video where competing systems built for benign commercial conditions would struggle. For lower-bandwidth, security-sensitive use cases, the company's Secure Burst Data service, an enhanced version of its long-standing Short Burst Data messaging, adds end-to-end transmission security for applications like command and control links and unattended ground sensors that need to report back without a large data footprint.

Iridium also runs a substantial Internet of Things and maritime and aviation safety business built on the same constellation, giving it revenue streams well beyond defense even though defense and government together make up a meaningful, stable share of the business. The company trades on Nasdaq under the ticker IRDM and is headquartered in McLean, Virginia. Compared to the giant prime contractors that dominate most defense directories, Iridium is a relatively lean operator, closer to a thousand employees than ten thousand, but the infrastructure it owns and operates is genuinely unique, and hard for any competitor to replicate quickly.
