European small satellite launch vehicles, engines and launch services

//Overview

Isar Aerospace was founded in 2018 by three students from the Technical University of Munich who had worked on the university rocket team and concluded that Europe had no commercial answer to the American small launch market. Eight years later the company has raised something in the order of 820 million euros in private capital across seven rounds, including a 270 million euro Series D in June 2026, which makes it the best funded launch startup on the continent. Headquarters and engineering sit in Ottobrunn on the southern edge of Munich, with series production at Vaterstetten, more than 400 staff from close to fifty nationalities, and operations spread across five countries.

The product is Spectrum, a two stage rocket sized to put up to 1,000 kilograms into low Earth orbit and around 700 kilograms into a sun synchronous orbit. It burns liquid oxygen and propane, an unusual choice that gives clean combustion and simpler handling than kerosene while avoiding the deep cryogenics of methane. Nine Aquila engines power the first stage and a single vacuum optimised Aquila drives the second, all developed and built in house. The manufacturing approach is as much the point as the vehicle. Isar prints engine components additively, builds tanks and structures from carbon composite, and automates as much of the line as it can, with the stated aim of vertical integration deep enough that a supply chain problem in another country cannot stop a launch.

Launches fly from Andoya Spaceport in northern Norway, where the company holds a twenty year lease on a dedicated pad signed in 2021, with engine and stage testing done at Esrange in Sweden. The first Spectrum flight, in March 2025, failed shortly after liftoff, which was the expected outcome the company had publicly prepared for. The second, on 5 September 2026, reached orbit and released every customer payload, a group that included cubesats from TU Berlin, the University of Maribor, EnduroSat, NTNU and the TU Wien Space Team plus a technology demonstration from Dcubed. That made Isar the first private European company to put a payload into orbit on its own launcher. Commercial service is sold in three shapes, dedicated missions for a single customer, a lead configuration where one payload sets the orbit and others ride along, and pure rideshare. Backlog includes Astroscale Japan and SEOPS, and the European Space Agency selected the company under the European Launcher Challenge with a contract worth close to 170 million euros. Defence interest follows naturally from all of this, since a launcher that can be built and flown entirely inside Europe is the precondition for sovereign reconnaissance and communications constellations. The company has been explicit about that framing in its own funding announcements, pitching the Series D as money for sovereign access to space rather than for a commercial smallsat market that has proved thinner than forecasters once expected. What happens next is a manufacturing question more than an engineering one. Reaching orbit twice proves the design. Turning the Vaterstetten line into something that produces vehicles at a monthly cadence, and turning a single Norwegian pad into a launch operation that can absorb that rate, is the harder problem, and it is the one every small launch company before this has stumbled on.
