Israel Weapon Industries Ltd. (IWI)

Rifles, machine guns, pistols and computerised fire control.

//Overview

Israel Weapon Industries traces its line back to 1933 and the Magen small arms division of Israel Military Industries, the shop that produced the Uzi and sold more than ten million of them. The division was privatised in 2005 and renamed IWI, and the Uzi lineage still shows in how the company markets itself abroad. It is a member of the SK Group controlled by Samy Katsav, which also owns Camero-Tech, Meprolight and Israel Shipyards. Production has moved from the old Ramat HaSharon site to a purpose built plant in Kiryat Gat that was budgeted at 180 million shekels, and the great majority of output is exported. Weapons are developed by joint teams drawn from the company and the Israel Defense Forces, so configurations change on the back of field use rather than marketing cycles. That feedback loop is the commercial argument the company makes to foreign buyers, and it is the reason its catalogue turns over faster than most small arms houses of comparable size.

The bullpup TAVOR family is the flagship. TAR-21 entered service in 2001, the shorter X95 replaced it as the Israeli standard rifle and is also sold as a 9 mm submachine gun, and TAVOR 7 moves the layout to 7.62x51 mm for designated marksman work. Conventional rifles cover the rest of the market. GALIL ACE, a modernised descendant of the Galil, serves widely across South America and Asia, while CARMEL and ARAD are the newer 5.56 mm designs, with ARAD 7 as the battle rifle and marksman variant. Precision fire goes to the GALIL SNIPER semi-automatic rifle and the DAN .338 bolt action. Sustained fire comes from the NEGEV light machine gun in 5.56 mm and the NEGEV NG7 in 7.62 mm, a pairing that has put the company into general purpose machine gun tenders it once had no entry for.

Handguns carry a large share of export volume. The JERICHO series has been an Israeli police and military sidearm since 1990, the striker fired MASADA arrived in 2017, and IWI still manufactures the Desert Eagle. The UZI PRO keeps the submachine gun line alive in a polymer framed form. Shotguns are covered by the bullpup TAVOR TS12, and the AR-pattern ZION-15 was added for the American market, where IWI US assembles rifles, shotguns and pistols in Middletown, Pennsylvania. In April 2024 the company launched ARBEL, a computerised firing system with an electronic trigger and onboard processing that releases the shot when its algorithm judges the weapon is on target. Nine years in development, it was applied first to the NEGEV in both calibres and to assault rifles, and Israeli forces used it in combat before the public launch. IWI also runs security and counter-terrorism training and licenses local manufacture abroad, including a joint plant in India, which is how it reaches markets that will not buy finished Israeli weapons off the shelf. Sights, mounts and furniture round out the catalogue, much of it shared with sister company Meprolight inside the same group.
