ITP Aero

Aero engine modules, defence propulsion, industrial turbines and MRO

//Overview

ITP Aero was formed in 1989 at Zamudio outside Bilbao as a joint venture between Spanish industry and Rolls-Royce, and for three decades it grew inside the British engine maker as a risk-and-revenue-sharing partner rather than a supplier taking orders. That relationship ended commercially in September 2022, when Rolls-Royce sold the company to Bain Capital. As of mid-2023 Bain holds 76.5 percent of the voting rights, with Indra Sistemas on 9.5 percent and the state holding company SEPI, JB Capital, Finkatuz and the Basque Government splitting the rest, a deliberately Spanish shareholder register for an asset the government treats as strategic. Around 6,500 people work across sites in Spain, the United Kingdom, the United States, Mexico, India and Norway.

Commercial aviation is the volume business, split between twin-aisle, single-aisle and regional, and business aviation engines. The company's signature capability is the low pressure turbine, the rear module where the last energy is pulled out of the gas stream, and it designs and builds the LPT for the Rolls-Royce Trent family including the Trent 1000. Alongside turbines it supplies casings, structures, externals and precision castings, and it runs its own research and technology programmes on sustainable aviation, engine diagnostics and digitalisation.

Defence is organised as its own market area covering combat aircraft and trainers, transport aircraft, helicopter engines and future systems. ITP Aero designs, manufactures, assembles, tests and overhauls its share of the EJ200 that powers the Eurofighter Typhoon, a Eurojet consortium engine now past 1,200 units delivered, and it is the exclusive EJ200 maintenance provider for the Spanish Air Force as well as handling module work for Austria, Saudi Arabia, Oman, Kuwait and Qatar. It is a partner in the Europrop International TP400-D6 that turns the propellers of the A400M, again across design, production and overhaul. Looking forward, the company leads the Spanish share of the engine pillar of the Future Combat Air System, working on the New Generation Fighter Engine and its digital engine control and monitoring unit.

Two further lines sit alongside. Industrial turbines apply the same aerodynamic and hot-section work to power generation and mechanical drive machines. The maintenance, repair and overhaul business runs engine shops, test facilities, diagnostics and experimental services for civil and military operators, and it has been growing by acquisition: in December 2025 ITP Aero agreed to buy Aero Norway, a CFM56 overhaul specialist at Stavanger, with completion expected in the first half of 2026. The customer list on the manufacturing side reads as a who's who of the engine world, since ITP Aero sits as a tier one partner to Rolls-Royce, Pratt & Whitney, Honeywell and GE, which gives it an unusual position for a company of its size. It competes with its own customers on parts while depending on them for programme access.
