Jacobs Solutions has been an engineering firm since 1947, when Joseph J. Jacobs started what became one of the country's largest technical and professional services companies, and it has been through a significant reshaping in the past two years. In September 2024, Jacobs spun off its Critical Mission Solutions and Cyber and Intelligence government services businesses and merged them into Amentum, creating a new independent, publicly traded company. That transaction moved a large share of Jacobs's national security IT, cyber, and space mission operations work, including much of its NASA support, into Amentum, and Jacobs's shareholders ended up owning the majority of the combined entity while Jacobs itself retained a smaller stake. What remains under the Jacobs Solutions name today is built around its People and Places Solutions business, which covers water, environmental, advanced manufacturing, life sciences, transportation, energy, and cities and infrastructure work for both government and commercial clients, plus a continuing national security and defense practice focused on the physical and engineering side of defense missions rather than IT and intelligence services.

That defense practice designs and delivers infrastructure across land, air, maritime, and space domains, covering everything from facility modernization at military installations to secure, resilient design for buildings that need to withstand both physical and cyber threats. It has also kept program management work for complex federal engineering efforts, including support for the Missile Defense Agency's SHIELD contract and engineering work tied to Fermilab's DUNE neutrino experiment, a Department of Energy science program. Jacobs continues to hold decades-long relationships with the US Army Corps of Engineers, including recent contract wins supporting facilities work in Japan, and it maintains a substantial environmental remediation and water infrastructure business that touches both civilian and defense-adjacent sites, a legacy of the company's long history doing environmental cleanup work at industrial and military facilities. On the commercial and civil side, Jacobs designs water treatment systems, advises on climate adaptation and integrated water management, and supports advanced manufacturing and life sciences clients building out vaccine and pharmaceutical production capacity, work that draws on the same large-scale program management skills the company applies to defense infrastructure.

Jacobs Solutions trades on the New York Stock Exchange under the ticker J and is headquartered in Dallas, Texas, having relocated from Pasadena, California in 2016. The company employs around 43,000 people across more than 400 offices worldwide and reported annual revenue above 12 billion dollars in its most recent fiscal year, a company now more narrowly focused on physical infrastructure and engineering delivery after shedding its intelligence and cyber-heavy government IT business to Amentum.
