Jordan Design and Development Bureau (JODDB)

Jordan's defence design house, manufacturing group and industrial free zone.

//Overview

JODDB was created by royal decree on 24 August 1999 as the King Abdullah Design and Development Bureau, and the older KADDB name still appears on plenty of hardware and in a good deal of press. It was renamed to Jordan Design and Development Bureau, and it remains state owned and tied to the armed forces, funded partly from the defence budget and partly from what it earns selling technology and products. The founding idea was to give Jordan its own ability to design, test and build military equipment instead of importing everything and modifying it locally. The bureau is organised into an Engineering Group, a Manufacturing Group and a Programs Group, with research and development, test and evaluation, and an innovation hub sitting across them. Headquarters is on Hussein bin Ali Street in Jabal Amman.

The engineering and manufacturing work has produced a run of vehicles pitched squarely at special operations, border and counter-terrorism customers, which is the market Jordan understands best and where it has genuine operational credibility. Al-Barq is a 1,750 kg high mobility armoured tactical vehicle carrying three crew, powered by a 900 cc three cylinder engine, protected to B4 and armed with a shielded 7.62 mm machine gun. Al-Hajras is smaller again at 2,200 kg gross, a two seat 4x4 with a remote weapon station aimed at law enforcement and special forces. Al-Wahsh is the heavier internal security vehicle of the family and has been seen in Libyan army service, and JODDB showed the Al-Wahsh Al-Kaser at IDEX 2025, a four crew version carrying a stabilised 12.7 mm remote weapon station. Older but heavier work includes the Dawsar modular armoured platform, a heavily protected personnel carrier built on the hull of the Tariq, Jordan's upgraded Centurion. Unmanned systems have become a focus too, and the armed forces opened a UAV test centre built with JODDB that provides airspace management for trialling drones, counter drone equipment and electronic warfare systems.

The third strand is industrial rather than technical. The JODDB Investment Group, launched in 2010, holds stakes in operating companies that turn designs into production, among them Jordan Light Vehicle Manufacturing, a joint venture with the British firm Jankel, the precision machining house JordanAMCO, the ammunition business Jorammo, the armour producer First Armour, a cyber security arm and a joint venture with Aselsan of Turkey. Around them sits the JODDB Industrial Park at Khalidiyah in Mafraq governorate, opened by King Abdullah II in October 2009, a 3,800 dunam free zone dedicated to defence manufacturing and vehicle assembly and placed deliberately on the roads between Amman, Zarqa and the Saudi, Iraqi and Syrian crossings. Test and evaluation services, tendering and technology transfer complete the picture of an organisation that behaves as design authority, factory owner and industrial landlord at once.
