KNDS Deutschland

German maker of the Leopard 2 tank, PzH 2000 howitzer, and Puma infantry vehicle.

//Overview

KNDS Deutschland, known for most of its recent history as Krauss-Maffei Wegmann or KMW, builds some of the most recognizable armored vehicles in NATO service and forms the German half of the Franco-German KNDS group. Its lineage runs back further than most defense manufacturers, tracing to Maffei, a Munich locomotive builder founded in 1838, and Krauss & Co, founded in 1860, two firms that merged in 1931. The defense business as a distinct entity dates to 1999, when Krauss-Maffei's military vehicle division was spun off and merged with the artillery and munitions specialist Wegmann & Co to form Krauss-Maffei Wegmann. KMW merged with France's Nexter in 2015 to create KNDS, and it took the KNDS Deutschland name in 2024 as the group moved toward a shared brand.

It remains headquartered in Munich. The Leopard 2 main battle tank is the company's best known product by a wide margin, in service with more than a dozen European militaries and several beyond the continent, and it became one of the most closely watched weapons systems in the world after Germany and allied operators began sending Leopard 2s to Ukraine starting in 2023, a decision that required difficult political sign-off from Berlin given Germany's traditionally cautious arms export posture. The Panzerhaubitze 2000, or PzH 2000, is KMW's tracked self-propelled howitzer, widely regarded as one of the more capable artillery systems in NATO inventories and another platform supplied to Ukraine in meaningful numbers. The Puma infantry fighting vehicle, developed jointly with Rheinmetall, replaced the aging Marder in German service with heavier armor and a larger troop-carrying capacity, though its fielding was slowed for years by cost overruns and technical setbacks that drew sustained criticism in the German press.

KMW also produces the GTK Boxer, a modular wheeled armored vehicle developed with a multinational consortium and now in service or on order across a long list of European militaries plus Australia, alongside a family of bridge-laying and combat engineering vehicles that let armored formations cross obstacles under fire. Revenue reported for 2024 came to roughly 3.8 billion euros, reflecting the sharp increase in German and European defense orders since Russia's 2022 invasion of Ukraine, though older employee figures around 3,200 predate that surge and current headcount is not independently confirmable from public sources. As with its French counterpart, KNDS Deutschland now works jointly with KNDS France on shared future programs, most notably the Main Ground Combat System meant to eventually succeed both the Leopard 2 and the Leclerc, even as it continues building and upgrading its existing platforms under German and export contracts in the meantime.
