Knight's Armament Company

Sniper rifles, machine guns, suppressors, rails and night vision optics.

//Overview

Knight's Armament Company was set up in 1982 by C. Reed Knight Jr. as a research and development shop in Titusville, Florida, and it has stayed a private, family-run business ever since. The design lineage matters here more than the size of the factory. Knight worked closely with Eugene Stoner in the designer's later years, and the AR-pattern rifles and the constant-recoil machine gun the company sells today both descend directly from that collaboration. The plant sits on Columbia Boulevard in Titusville, a short drive from the Space Coast launch pads.

Rifles are the core. The SR-25 took Stoner's AR-10 architecture into a match-grade semi-automatic sniper rifle in 7.62mm, and the US military adopted two versions of it: the Navy took the Mk 11 Mod 0 sniper weapon system, and in September 2005 the Army selected the M110 Semi-Automatic Sniper System, which has kept generating orders two decades later, including guns bought for transfer to Ukraine. The SR-15 is the 5.56mm commercial and law enforcement equivalent, the SR-16 the select-fire military carbine, and the SR-30 a shorter-barrelled variant of the same family. Britain adopted the KS-1 as the L403A1 under Project Hunter, a programme aimed at the country's special operations capable units. The rifles are imported by Edgar Brothers under a contract worth around 90 million pounds for up to 10,000 weapons over a decade, with the first tranche of about 1,620 systems going to the Ranger Regiment and the Royal Marines Commandos.

The Light Assault Machine Gun is the other headline design. Revealed publicly in 2017 after appearing unnamed at the previous year's SHOT Show, it fires 5.56mm from a constant-recoil action at a deliberately low cyclic rate of roughly 600 rounds per minute and weighs about 8.6 pounds empty, which is close to half what comparable belt-fed guns weigh. US Army Rangers have been photographed firing it.

A large slice of the business has nothing to do with complete weapons. Knight's built the RAS and RIS rail systems that turned the M4 into a modular carbine for the US military, and it still sells those alongside the later URX II, URX 3 and URX 4 handguards, folding back-up iron sights, optic mounts and rail accessories. Signature reduction is a business line of its own, covering muzzle devices and suppressors for 9mm, 5.56mm and 7.62mm weapons as well as a dedicated machine gun suppressor. The Knight Vision arm supplies helmet and weapon mounted image intensification and thermal optics. There is a merchandise line too, sold as KAC Gear. The company has stayed deliberately small and does much of its own machining in Titusville, which is part of why its rifles command the prices they do and why deliveries have at times run well behind demand. Commercial buyers pay that premium for the same SR-15 uppers, back-up sights and rail hardware that special operations units carry. The overlap between the military and civilian catalogues is the business model.
