KONSTRUKTA - Defence, a.s.

KONSTRUKTA - Defence is the design house behind Slovak artillery. Its parent institute, Konstrukta Trencin, was founded in 1953 as the successor to a Skoda Plzen weapons design office and grew into one of the larger armament research organisations in the Eastern Bloc, with a proving ground at Lieskovec opened in 1957. When Czechoslovakia split, the Slovak government divided the institute in 1993 into a defence arm and an industrial arm. The defence arm was folded into the state holding DMD Group in 2004, and since 2015 the Slovak Ministry of Defence has been the sole shareholder of that holding. The company is small by headcount, in the low hundreds, and sits in Dubnica nad Vahom. Revenue reached about 79 million euro in 2022 as European artillery demand returned.

Wheeled self-propelled guns are the product the company is known for. The line begins with the 152 mm DANA on a Tatra 8x8 chassis, a Czechoslovak design from the 1970s that put a fully automatic loading gun in an armoured turret on a truck decades before the idea became fashionable, and continues through the MODAN and ONDAVA modernisations. Zuzana took the concept to 155 mm with a 45 calibre barrel in 1997. Zuzana 2, introduced in 2009 with a 52 calibre gun, an armoured 8x8 chassis and a much improved fire control and navigation fit, is the current flagship and has had a real war. Slovakia ordered twenty-five in December 2018 for about 175 million euro, and from June 2022 sent systems to Ukraine, with Germany, Denmark and Norway jointly funding a further sixteen. Ukrainian crews have reported well on the gun's range and rate of fire and less well on its size. That feedback reshaped the roadmap. By late 2025 the company signalled it would wind down Zuzana 2 production and concentrate on EVA, a lighter 155 mm system introduced in 2015 that mounts the same class of gun on a 6x6 chassis, with an EVA M2 variant as the production standard.

The catalogue runs wider than howitzers. Mortars, rocket systems and their ammunition are designed in house, as are fire control and command systems, of which DELOSYS is the artillery fire control product tying guns, observers and command posts together. The company designs ammunition natures across the calibres it supplies. It also does vehicle work, covering wheeled and tracked chassis, superstructures and special bodies for army vehicles, and it builds simulators for gun crew and command training. Anti-terrorism equipment and upgrade packages for legacy Warsaw Pact systems fill out the rest. Customers are concentrated in Central Europe with additional sales into the Middle East and Africa. The engineering is done in Slovakia, and production is shared with the wider DMD Group, whose other member companies handle machining, assembly, ammunition filling and overhaul work that a design bureau of this size could never carry on its own, so a Zuzana leaving the line is the output of a holding rather than of one factory. That division of labour is the Slovak model in miniature. It also means order intake at Konstrukta translates into work across several towns in the Vah valley, which is a large part of why the Ministry of Defence keeps the holding intact rather than selling the pieces.
