Korea Aerospace Industries was assembled in 1999 out of the aerospace divisions of Samsung, Daewoo, and Hyundai, folded together under government pressure to end three companies competing for the same small domestic defense budget. It is listed on the Korea Exchange, with the Export-Import Bank of Korea and defense conglomerate Hanwha Aerospace among its largest shareholders, though no single holder controls a majority. Combat aircraft is where KAI has staked its reputation, most visibly through the KF-21 Boramae, a 4.5-generation fighter developed with Indonesia and now in flight testing ahead of planned production for the South Korean air force. Before the KF-21, KAI built its export business on the T-50 Golden Eagle family of supersonic jet trainers and its light-attack derivative, the FA-50, which has sold to air forces in Poland, the Philippines, Iraq, and several other countries looking for a cheaper alternative to Western fourth-generation fighters. Both aircraft were developed with Lockheed Martin as a technology partner, a relationship that continues to shape KAI's combat aircraft work.
Helicopters form the second major line. The KUH-1 Surion is South Korea's indigenous utility helicopter, developed with Airbus Helicopters and now the backbone of the army's rotary fleet, with a naval variant called Marineon and a medevac version in service as well. The LAH, or Light Armed Helicopter, is a dedicated attack variant developed from the same airframe family, filling a role South Korea previously covered with older US-made gunships. KAI also builds basic and intermediate trainers, the KT-1 Woongbi and the piston-engine KC-100 Naraon, and does contract manufacturing of aerostructures for Boeing and Airbus commercial programs. Space and unmanned systems round out the portfolio.
KAI has been the prime contractor or a major structural partner on South Korea's satellite programs, including the KOMPSAT and CAS500 Earth observation satellites and the GEO-KOMPSAT geostationary series, and it supplied structures for the Nuri (KSLV-II) launch vehicle that put Korea into the small club of nations capable of orbital launch with domestic rockets. On the unmanned side, KAI has been developing a family of tactical and reconnaissance drones alongside its manned aircraft work, positioning itself for South Korea's push toward manned-unmanned teaming for the KF-21. With roughly 5,200 employees, a workforce far smaller than the American and European primes it increasingly competes against for export orders, KAI has leaned on government backing and technology partnerships to punch above its size. Its FA-50 and KF-21 export campaigns across Eastern Europe, the Middle East, and Southeast Asia have become a genuine pressure point for legacy Western fighter sales in the light and medium combat aircraft segment.
