Korean Air runs an aerospace business that has nothing to do with flying passengers. The Aerospace Division, often written KAL-ASD, works from a 710,000 square metre technical centre in Busan and sits inside Korean Air, the Hanjin group airline listed in Seoul under 003490. Three lines make up the division. Aerostructures manufacturing is the largest at around 55 percent of divisional sales, military aircraft maintenance and upgrade takes roughly 25 percent, and unmanned aircraft development accounts for about 10 percent, the share management intends to grow fastest. Research groups covering launch vehicles, satellites, commercial and military aircraft, helicopters and simulation systems sit alongside, and the Busan site also functions as a commercial MRO centre with avionics and component shops and a paint hangar large enough for an Airbus A380.
The structures work is deeply embedded in both Western airframers. Korean Air builds the raked wingtips fitted to Boeing 777, 747 and 787 aircraft, the 737 MAX winglet, 787 stringers, and parts across the 737, 767 and 777 families. For Airbus it produces the A350 cargo door and Sharklet wingtip devices for the A320 and A330neo, and it has long supplied structures for the A330 and A380. Military manufacturing is older still. The division assembled Northrop F-5E and F-5F fighters under licence, built MD Helicopters MD 500 and Sikorsky UH-60 Black Hawk helicopters under licence, produced the aft fuselage and wings for the KF-16, and designed and flew its own Chang-Gong 91 light aircraft in 1991.
Depot maintenance is the steady business. Korean Air began programmed depot maintenance on the F-4 for the US Department of Defense in 1978 and became the leading Asian provider of that work, handling F-15, F-16, A-10, CH-53, CH-47, UH-60 and OH-58 aircraft for American forces and F-4, P-3C, H-60, 500MD, CH-47, Lynx and other types for the Korean Ministry of National Defense. In April 2025 the division was named preferred bidder for a roughly one trillion won UH-60 Black Hawk upgrade, and it is engaged in F-16 life extension work. Unmanned systems are the growth story. KAL-ASD is prime contractor for the KUS-FS, the medium altitude long endurance reconnaissance aircraft also called the MUAV, developed with the Agency for Defense Development and now in production alongside LIG Nex1 and Hanwha Systems under a contract signed in December 2023. The aircraft spans 25 metres, weighs up to 5,750 kilograms and stays airborne beyond 24 hours. Low observable work runs in parallel through the Kaori-X demonstrator, first flown in December 2021, and the LOWUS loyal wingman concept derived from it. Two things follow from that mix for a buyer. First, the division is a structures and sustainment house with a drone programme attached, so its capacity is measured in hangar slots and autoclave hours rather than in product catalogues. Second, its deepest customer relationship is with the United States military in Asia, which is unusual for a Korean industrial and gives it a maintenance pedigree measured in decades. Korean Air has said it intends to grow the unmanned share of divisional sales fastest, and the Busan site has been expanded toward that. Ownership sits with Korean Air rather than with a separately listed defence company, so the division's results surface inside airline reporting.
