Kraken Robotics started in Newfoundland in 2012 with one idea, that synthetic aperture sonar could be shrunk to fit small underwater vehicles, and it has since built three more businesses around that core. The original insight was that synthetic aperture processing, which had belonged to large towed arrays and national laboratories, could be miniaturised without giving up resolution. The sonar line is branded Kraken SAS and built on AquaPix MINSAS, a modular interferometric array that produces constant resolution of roughly two centimetres by two centimetres out to two hundred metres per side while also generating bathymetry. KATFISH is the towed version, a stabilised towfish that runs at up to ten knots and covers about four square kilometres an hour. SeaScout wraps KATFISH into a deployable mine countermeasures package with the Autonomous Launch and Recovery System and the Tentacle Winch, both built from non-welded aluminium to keep the magnetic signature low enough for minehunting vessels.
SeaPower is the power business, started in 2016. It makes pressure-tolerant lithium-ion batteries using pouch cells embedded in a silicon polymer matrix, which removes the need for a pressure housing or oil compensation and pushes energy density well past conventional subsea packs. UUV Technologies covers the vehicles and the parts that move them. ThunderFish Alpha is an AUV rated to either 1,000 or 6,000 metres and carries AquaPix MINSAS alongside the SeaVision 3D laser scanner, and ThunderFish XL is being designed as a resident inspection vehicle supported by a seafloor docking and charging station. SeaThrust rim-driven thrusters, with a hubless propeller wrapped around a brushless motor, provide the propulsion.
Services are the fourth leg and cover towed SAS survey, sub-bottom imaging, acoustic coring and LiDAR work, sold as data rather than hardware. Defence has become the centre of gravity. The Government of Canada awarded Kraken a prime contract worth about $50 million for Remote Minehunting and Disposal Systems, delivering light weight and operator portable AUVs equipped with AquaPix sonar to Royal Canadian Navy units in Halifax and Esquimalt. SeaScout systems are going to the Royal Danish Navy and the Polish Navy for installation on their minehunters. Kraken also sells to offshore energy operators, hydrographic agencies and research institutions, and its sonar has been used in Arctic searches for the lost Franklin expedition ships and aboard Ocean Infinity's Seabed Constructor during the hunt for Malaysia Airlines Flight 370. Revenue was about CAD 91 million in 2024, before either acquisition landed. The company changed shape sharply in 2026. It bought 3D at Depth, the underwater LiDAR firm behind SeaVision, and then acquired Covelya Group for $615 million, bringing in Sonardyne, EIVA, Voyis, Wavefront Systems, Chelsea Technologies and Forcys along with roughly 750 more staff and twelve facilities.
