L3Harris Technologies

L3Harris Technologies formed in June 2019 when L3 Technologies merged with Harris Corporation, combining two companies that had each spent decades assembling smaller defense electronics businesses. Harris brought a long history in radio communications and space payloads, L3 brought night vision, ISR sensors, and a sprawling portfolio of niche systems businesses. The combined company, headquartered in Melbourne, Florida and trading on the NYSE as LHX, has kept growing by acquisition, most significantly with the 2023 purchase of Aerojet Rocketdyne, which pulled solid and liquid rocket propulsion into the fold and pushed L3Harris into missile production at a scale it hadn't had before. The company reorganized its reporting structure in 2024 into three segments that map roughly onto space, communications, and missiles.

Space & Mission Systems builds satellite payloads and full satellites, ground systems, and sensors for missile warning, missile tracking, and intelligence collection, including work supporting the Space Development Agency's proliferated satellite constellations. Communications & Spectrum Dominance covers the tactical radios, like the Falcon and AN/PRC family used across US and allied forces, along with electronic warfare systems such as the EA-37B Compass Call jamming aircraft and jammers like the AN/ALQ-99 and AN/ALQ-172, plus L3Harris's long-running night vision business, maker of the GPNVG-18 panoramic goggle and the AN/PVS-31A binocular device used widely across US special operations and conventional forces. Missile Solutions is the newest segment and centers on the former Aerojet Rocketdyne business, which builds solid rocket motors and liquid propulsion for missile defense interceptors, space launch vehicles, and tactical missiles, including motors used in the SM-3 interceptor family and hypersonic weapon programs. The segment also picked up L3Harris's own missile warning and precision strike work, positioning the combined group as both a propulsion supplier and a weapons integrator.

Outside those three core segments, L3Harris carries a wide tail of legacy businesses inherited from its constituent companies: avionics and mission processing systems flown on the F-35 and C-130J, cockpit voice and flight data recorders used across commercial and military aviation, aircraft simulators like the AVCATT mobile trainer, and mobile phone location technology, including the once-secretive StingRay cell-site simulator, that has drawn attention from civil liberties groups over its use by US law enforcement. With about 47,000 employees and roughly 21 billion dollars in 2024 revenue, L3Harris has become one of the five largest US defense primes by most measures, distinguished less by any single flagship platform than by how many different subsystems across space, air, sea, and cyber warfare carry an L3Harris nameplate somewhere inside them.
