Larsen & Toubro Defence
Artillery, armored platforms, warships, and precision missile systems for India's armed forces.
Larsen & Toubro is best known outside India as a construction and engineering conglomerate, but its defense arm has grown into one of the country's most important private-sector suppliers to the armed forces. The business splits broadly into two halves. The defense and aerospace group builds guns, armored vehicles, missile launch systems, radar, and fire control equipment, and it has become DRDO's go-to industrial partner for turning laboratory prototypes into fielded hardware. Its clearest public success is the K9 Vajra-T, a licensed and heavily localized version of Hanwha's K9 Thunder self-propelled howitzer, delivered to the Indian Army in the hundreds under a contract first signed in 2017.
L&T also manufactures launcher systems for the Pinaka multi-barrel rocket system and has since picked up follow-on orders to overhaul and upgrade the fleet as it ages. On the missile side, the company supports DRDO's Akash air defense program and the BrahMos supersonic cruise missile with structures, launchers, and ground equipment, and it has separately partnered with MBDA through a joint venture, L&T MBDA Missile Systems, to build precision-guided munitions domestically. The shipbuilding side operates out of its own yard near Kattupalli, Tamil Nadu, and has delivered around fifty vessels to the Navy and Coast Guard since its first contract in 2010, spanning offshore patrol vessels, interceptor boats, a floating dock, and survey ships. It has also fabricated hull sections and pressure-critical components for India's Arihant-class strategic submarines and, together with DRDO, developed air-independent propulsion modules intended for the Kalvari-class boats, work that points toward L&T's ambitions in the country's next submarine program, Project-75(India).
A precision engineering and systems unit handles submarine-related equipment, naval and land weapon-launch systems, and sensor and auxiliary hardware that doesn't fit neatly under either the land or naval banners. More recently, L&T has entered a partnership with Bharat Electronics to pursue India's fifth-generation fighter effort, the Advanced Medium Combat Aircraft, an early-stage move that shows the group angling to expand from platforms and subsystems into aerostructures and airframe work. Across all of this, the throughline is import substitution: L&T positions itself as the industrial muscle behind India's push to build what it used to buy from Russia, France, and Israel, absorbing DRDO's technology transfers and turning them into manufacturable, exportable hardware at scale. The parent company itself dates to 1938, founded in Bombay by two Danish engineers, and today ranks among India's largest industrial groups, with defense representing a fast-growing but still comparatively small slice of a business empire that also spans infrastructure, IT services, and heavy engineering.
