LIG Nex1 traces back to 1976, when it was established as Goldstar Precision Industries, a defense electronics subsidiary of what became LG Electronics. It went through several renamings over the following decades, becoming LG Innotek's defense arm in 2000, then NEX1 Future in 2004, before the LIG Group spun it out as LIG Nex1 in 2007 after LG's broader corporate restructuring. Today it operates as LIG Defense & Aerospace, headquartered in Yongin, Gyeonggi Province, and trades on the Korea Exchange, with LIG Corporation as its largest shareholder alongside a substantial stake held by South Korea's National Pension Service. The company has grown into one of South Korea's most important guided-weapons manufacturers, spanning missiles, torpedoes, radar, avionics, and electronic warfare.
Its missile portfolio includes the Hyunmoo-3 land-attack cruise missile, part of South Korea's independent strike capability aimed at deterring North Korea, the AT-1K Raybolt portable anti-tank guided missile, the SSM-700K C-Star ship-launched anti-ship missile, and the KP-SAM Chiron man-portable air defense missile. On the undersea side, LIG Nex1 builds the K731 White Shark heavyweight torpedo, the K745 Blue Shark lightweight torpedo, and its upgraded K745A1 Red Shark variant, giving the Navy an indigenous alternative to imported torpedo systems. Its radar lines include the ESR-500A and LRS-450 systems along with local air defense radar used to cue ground-based air defense batteries, and its electronic warfare business covers shipborne, airborne, and ground-based jamming and signal-intercept equipment, plus more recent additions in counter-drone detection and jamming as the threat from small unmanned aircraft has grown along the Korean peninsula's borders. LIG Nex1 has also moved into unmanned systems more broadly, developing multi-purpose unmanned helicopters, cargo-carrying multicopter drones, unmanned surface and underwater vehicles, and remotely operated ground robots aimed at reconnaissance and explosive ordnance disposal roles.
Precision-guided munitions and avionics integration round out the portfolio, and the company has increasingly positioned itself around modular, networked weapons designs that let a single missile body be reconfigured for different seekers, warheads, and launch platforms, an approach it has showcased publicly as it pursues export customers beyond its traditional role as a supplier to the South Korean military alone. Between missiles, torpedoes, radar, and electronic warfare, LIG Nex1 functions as South Korea's closest analog to a dedicated national missile and sensor house, filling a role that in larger defense markets is often split across several separate companies. Its lineage inside the LG and LIG conglomerates also gave it early access to precision electronics manufacturing know-how that took root in Korea's consumer electronics boom, a background that shows up in how much of its missile and radar work leans on signal processing and seeker electronics rather than pure mechanical or propulsion engineering.
