ManTech International

ManTech International was founded in 1968 in Livingston, New Jersey by Franc Wertheimer and George J. Pedersen, and for most of its history it operated as a straightforward Beltway government services firm, growing through federal IT and systems engineering contracts long before cybersecurity was a common term. It went public in 2002, traded on Nasdaq under the ticker MANT for two decades, and then went private again in 2022, when the private equity firm Carlyle Group bought it for about 3.9 billion dollars, a roughly one-third premium over its trading price at the time. It now operates as a portfolio company headquartered in Herndon, Virginia. The core of ManTech's business is intelligence and counterintelligence support, work it has done for defense and intelligence agencies since well before its public listing, providing systems engineering, analysis, and mission support to customers whose specific needs the company generally cannot discuss in public detail.

Cybersecurity runs alongside that work as its own line, covering network defense, vulnerability assessment, and secure systems engineering for both the intelligence community and civilian agencies, including a role supporting the Department of Homeland Security's Continuous Diagnostics and Mitigation program that monitors federal network security in near real time. C4ISR, ManTech's shorthand for command, control, communications, computers, intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance work, spans systems integration and engineering support for military platforms and sensor networks, an area that has grown as the Pentagon pushes more of its C4ISR modernization to outside integrators rather than building everything in-house. Enterprise IT and software and systems development form the more conventional side of the business, covering cloud migration, application development, and data management for federal customers well beyond the defense and intelligence world, including work with NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory and the US Air Force Space Command. Training, supply chain management, and management consulting round out the portfolio as smaller service lines that tend to ride alongside ManTech's larger systems and cyber contracts rather than standing as separate lines of business.

ManTech has historically served more than 50 US government agencies across well over a thousand active contracts and task orders, a customer base broad enough that the company rarely describes itself around any one signature program the way a hardware manufacturer might. Since the Carlyle acquisition, ManTech has continued pursuing federal cyber and intelligence work as a private company, no longer subject to quarterly public reporting, with roughly 11,000 employees across 19 US states and operations in more than 20 countries. Its position sits squarely in the crowded but durable market of technical services contractors that keep federal networks, sensors, and intelligence systems running rather than building the platforms those systems plug into.
