Markforged was founded in 2013 by Greg Mark and David Benhaim and made its name with a genuinely new idea: laying continuous carbon fibre, fibreglass or Kevlar strands inside a printed nylon part rather than chopping fibre into the feedstock. That produced desktop-scale parts stiff enough to replace machined aluminum in jigs, fixtures and low-stress functional hardware, which is a different proposition from the prototype-focused printers that dominated at the time. The company later added metal printing using a bound-metal process it calls Atomic Diffusion Additive Manufacturing, where a green part is printed, washed and sintered.
The current range runs from the Mark Two desktop composite printer through the industrial X7, up to the FX10 and FX20. The FX10 is positioned as the first industrial machine to combine production metal printing and continuous fibre composite printing in one frame, with a 375 by 300 by 300 mm heated build volume and roughly twice the speed of the X7. The FX20 is the largest machine, built for high-temperature materials at a build chamber several times bigger than anything else in the line. Metal X remains the dedicated bound-metal system, and the PX100 is a metal binder jetting platform. Everything is tied together by Eiger, a cloud application handling slicing, fibre routing, sinter scaling, print simulation, a secure digital part library and fleet management, marketed together with the machines as the Digital Forge. Markforged took security in that platform seriously earlier than most, achieving ISO/IEC 27001 certification in 2020 and building in single sign-on, multi-factor authentication and encrypted, tamper-resistant print files.
The defense angle is expeditionary manufacturing. A ruggedised X7 Field Edition was built for forward deployment, and the argument made to military logisticians is that a printer, a spool and a part file can substitute for a shipping container of low-demand spares. In practice the strongest documented uses are tooling, fixtures, ground support equipment and some production parts rather than flight-critical structure, which is a fair reflection of what continuous fibre nylon and bound metal can carry.
Ownership has changed twice in quick succession and is changing again. Markforged went public on the New York Stock Exchange through a SPAC under the ticker MKFG, then was acquired by Nano Dimension for 116 million dollars in a deal that closed on 25 April 2025. Just over a year later, on 27 May 2026, Nano Dimension agreed to sell Markforged to Stratasys for 42.5 million dollars in cash, retaining only the metal binder jetting product line for itself. Stratasys framed the purchase explicitly around aerospace, defense and industrial production capability. That transaction was still pending regulatory approval as of mid-2026 and is expected to close in the second half of the year, so Markforged remains a Nano Dimension subsidiary for now. Revenue in 2025 was around 70 million dollars. The company is based in Waltham, Massachusetts.
