MARSS Group
Counter-drone and multi-domain surveillance house behind the NiDAR AI command and control platform, the Interceptor drone killer, and naval, border and critical infrastructure protection.
MARSS is a counter-drone and multi-domain surveillance company built around NiDAR, an AI-enabled command and control platform that fuses radar, electro-optical and infrared cameras, radio frequency detectors and sonar into a single operating picture. Johannes Pinl started the business in Monaco in 2005, having worked as a student on an automatic berthing system for yachts, and the holding entity, Marine and Remote Sensing Solutions SAM, stayed Monegasque for two decades. It has never been a single-site business. Engineering has long sat in Bristol and London, a Riyadh office serves Gulf customers, and in June 2026 the company confirmed Nice as its new headquarters, backed by a European investment of more than EUR 10 million expected to add up to 150 engineering and software jobs over three years. Older material still gives Monaco as the head office, which was accurate until that move.
Ownership changed in 2026. Electro Optic Systems, the Australian firm listed on the ASX, agreed in January to buy the MARSS defence business for USD 36 million up front plus an earnout tied to new orders, and completed the deal in May. Roughly 80 specialist staff, the NiDAR intellectual property, customer contracts and hardware moved across. MARSS trades as an EOS company under Pinl and the existing management team, and the logic of the pairing is plain enough: EOS builds effectors, remote weapon stations and high energy lasers, MARSS builds the software that works out what to shoot at.
NiDAR Core is sensor agnostic by design, which matters commercially because customers rarely want to rip out radar and camera fits they already own. Around it sit NiDAR Command for turnkey command centres, NiDAR 4D for detection across air, land, surface and subsurface, and NiDAR CUAS for layered counter-drone protection. The X series covers the deployable end: X-COMPACT for surface and air detection on mobile platforms, X for networked vehicles, X-JOC and X-TERRA as mobile command stations with integrated detection and countermeasures, and X-SCOUT as an unmanned sensor drop-off unit. Nation Shield, launched at the World Defense Show in February 2026, extends the same picture from the tactical edge up to national mission command. An Autonomous Mission Management module added in 2025 lets NiDAR task unmanned ground, surface and air vehicles rather than only display their feeds.
MARSS also builds its own effector. The Interceptor is a battery-powered rotary aircraft that rams hostile drones instead of carrying a warhead. Interceptor-MR engages Class 1 and Class 2 targets beyond 5 km using an infrared seeker and image recognition, at a fraction of the cost of a short range air defence missile, and the smaller Interceptor-SR is a portable version for infantry against Class 1 drones inside a kilometre.
The customer base is concentrated in the Gulf and increasingly in Africa. NiDAR covers more than 60 critical infrastructure sites in the Middle East, sits inside the UAE DAMITA air defence system alongside a locally produced 100 kW laser, and won a GBP 85 million country-wide contract in the region in 2026. The naval line runs from two Gulf naval bases through a South East Asian corvette programme to the Royal Canadian Navy auxiliary MV Asterix.
