MBDA

MBDA came together in December 2001 when France's Aerospatiale-Matra, the UK's Matra BAe Dynamics, and Italy's Alenia Marconi Systems missile arms merged into one group. Today it is jointly owned by Airbus and BAE Systems, each holding 37.5 percent, with Leonardo holding the remaining quarter, and it runs as five national divisions in France, the UK, Italy, Germany, and Spain, plus a smaller US subsidiary. The group calls itself Europe's answer to a fragmented missile market, and its catalog backs that up by covering nearly every guided weapon category a modern military needs. In the air, Meteor is the ramjet-powered beyond-visual-range missile now flying on Rafale, Typhoon, Gripen, and headed for the F-35 and South Korea's KF-21, while ASRAAM and MICA handle shorter-range air combat. On the ground and at sea, the Aster family anchors European air defense, most visibly in the SAMP/T batteries Ukraine has used against Russian missile and drone attacks, and the CAMM common missile compact system scales from ship-launched to vehicle-mounted configurations.

Mistral covers short-range man-portable and vehicle air defense. Strike weapons include Storm Shadow and its French twin SCALP-EG, the long-range cruise missiles the UK and France have supplied to Ukraine, along with the ASMP-A air-launched nuclear-capable missile that forms part of France's independent deterrent. Brimstone, developed for precision strikes on fast-moving armor, has likewise seen combat use in Ukraine. At sea, the Exocet family, in submarine-launched SM39, air-launched AM39, and surface-launched MM40 variants, remains one of the most widely exported anti-ship missiles in the world, joined by the Italian-flagged Marte and Otomat/Teseo lines and the Franco-British Sea Venom light anti-ship missile. Land forces get the Akeron MP anti-tank missile, successor to the long-serving MILAN, plus the Enforcer man-portable weapon.

MBDA also builds the MdCN naval cruise missile and is developing next-generation capability including the ASN4G hypersonic system and loitering munitions under its Colibri-type programs. Because it answers to three parent companies across three governments, MBDA effectively functions as pan-European defense infrastructure, its missiles integrated onto British, French, Italian, German, and dozens of export customers' aircraft, ships, and vehicles rather than tied to one nation's platforms. Revenue topped 4.5 billion euros in 2023 on a workforce of roughly 13,000, and the order book has grown steadily as European governments rebuild air defense stockpiles depleted by the war in Ukraine and by donations to Kyiv.
