MDA Space Ltd.

Satellites, space robotics, and radar geointelligence from Brampton.

//Overview

MDA Space runs three businesses out of Brampton, Ontario, and calling it the Canadarm company misses most of where the revenue now comes from. Satellite Systems is the largest segment. It supplies antennas, digital payloads, electronics and complete spacecraft for low, medium and geostationary orbit, and the company has spent the past three years standing up a production line meant to build satellites at a rate no Canadian manufacturer has attempted before. MDA AURORA is the anchor product, a software-defined satellite line that can be reconfigured on orbit across frequencies and orbital regimes, and it is the bus behind both Telesat Lightspeed, now a fully funded 225-satellite constellation, and Globalstar's next generation low Earth orbit fleet. That one segment brought in USD 336 million in the second quarter of 2026.

Robotics and Space Operations carries the heritage. Canadarm2 and the Dextre manipulator still perform maintenance on the International Space Station under a Canadian Space Agency contract Ottawa extended to 2030, and Canadarm3 is being built in Brampton for the Lunar Gateway. MDA SKYMAKER turns five decades of that experience into a catalogue of arm segments, joints and end effectors spanning roughly one metre to more than fifteen, sold for satellite servicing, in-space assembly, lunar rovers and landers. The segment also covers space vision sensors, launch and mission operations support, and the commercial space robotics control centre the company opened at its headquarters.

Geointelligence is the smallest of the three and the one defence and security buyers tend to meet first. MDA owns and operates RADARSAT-2, a C-band synthetic aperture radar satellite that can image more than 250,000 square kilometres of ocean in under a minute in any weather, day or night, and it sells both the imagery and the analytics built on top of it. Maritime Insights supports dark vessel detection for Fisheries and Oceans Canada under a contract renewed in 2025. CHORUS, due on orbit in late 2026, pairs a C-band satellite with RADARSAT lineage and an X-band satellite developed with ICEYE, which would make it the first commercial dual-band radar constellation in service. A separate Canadian Space Agency award worth more than CAD 600 million adds a fourth radar satellite to the RADARSAT Constellation Mission. Defence and security work runs across all three segments rather than sitting in one, from Arctic surveillance and maritime patrol support to robotics supplied into allied exploration programs and secure communications payloads. The company counts more than 450 missions over 55 years. About 3,800 people work for MDA across Canada, the United States and the United Kingdom, and it trades on the Toronto Stock Exchange. Ownership came back to Canada in 2020, when Northern Private Capital bought the business out of Maxar Technologies for roughly a billion Canadian dollars and then listed it in Toronto the following year.
