Mitsubishi Heavy Industries traces back to a Nagasaki shipyard the Mitsubishi founder leased from the Japanese government in the 1880s, and it has grown into a sprawling industrial conglomerate whose defense and space work is just one of four reporting segments alongside energy systems, plants and infrastructure, and logistics and drive systems. The defense and space unit alone would rank among the world's larger contractors, and it sits at the center of nearly every major Japan Self-Defense Forces platform. On the aircraft side, MHI built the F-2, a fighter developed jointly with the United States off the F-16 airframe, and it maintains and upgrades Japan's fleet of fighters and patrol aircraft while supplying engines and after-sales support. It is Japan's lead industrial partner on the Global Combat Air Programme, the next-generation fighter being developed jointly with the UK and Italy to replace the F-2 in the 2030s.

Naval work runs deep: MHI builds and shares construction of the Soryu and newer Taigei-class diesel-electric submarines with Kawasaki Heavy Industries, produces destroyers and submarine rescue ships, and builds Japan Coast Guard patrol vessels. Its missile portfolio spans the Type 12 surface-to-ship missile now being upgraded into an extended-range strike weapon that will also arm Taigei-class submarines, the Type 03 Chu-SAM surface-to-air system it manufactures to a Mitsubishi Electric design, torpedoes, and other naval ordnance. On land, MHI produces the Type 10, Japan's fourth-generation main battle tank fielded since 2012, along with other armored and combat vehicles for the Ground Self-Defense Force. Its space business runs the H-IIA, H-IIB, and newer H3 launch vehicles, supplies rocket engines, and has built hardware for the International Space Station including the Japanese Experiment Module, plus lunar exploration rover components developed with Toyota.

Beyond hardware, MHI's non-defense segments, covering power generation equipment, machinery, and logistics systems, dwarf the defense business in overall corporate revenue, which is part of why it ranks only around 32nd among global defense contractors by arms revenue despite its scale. The company is publicly traded on the Tokyo Stock Exchange under ticker 7011, employs over 100,000 people across its consolidated operations worldwide, and remains headquartered in Tokyo. Japan's post-2022 defense spending increases and export-rule relaxation have pushed MHI's defense order book higher, particularly around missile production and the GCAP fighter program.
