Moog started with a single idea in 1951, when Bill Moog patented the electrohydraulic servo valve that let a small electrical signal control a much larger hydraulic force with precision. That patent became the seed of a company now built around motion control across four segments: Aircraft Controls, Space and Defense, Industrial, and a smaller Components business that supplies slip rings and related hardware to the other three. Aircraft Controls remains the largest of the group, supplying flight control actuation for commercial airliners including the Boeing 787 and Airbus A350, work that runs alongside its military business rather than in a separate division. On the defense side, Moog's footprint spans air, land, sea, and space.

In air defense, it builds actuation and missile steering systems for guided munitions and interceptors, along with the flight control actuators used on the F-35 Lightning II. In land defense, the company supplies turreted weapon systems, fast ammunition handling hardware, and components for counter-unmanned aerial system platforms, positioning it as a motion-control supplier to combat vehicle and force protection programs rather than a vehicle builder itself. Its naval defense work centers on undersea actuation systems and motion control hardware built to survive the pressure and corrosion of shipboard and submarine environments, an area where reliability matters as much as precision. Space is where Moog's history runs deepest outside aviation.
