MSA Safety Incorporated

MSA Safety is a broad industrial safety manufacturer rather than a defense company, and reading it any other way overstates it. Founded in 1914 as Mine Safety Appliances, it makes equipment for people who work where the air, the heat or the height can kill them. The company is headquartered in Cranberry Township outside Pittsburgh, trades on the New York Stock Exchange as MSA, employs roughly 5,300 people across more than 40 locations, and turned over about 1.9 billion dollars in 2025. Reporting runs on two geographic segments, Americas at around two thirds of sales and International at the balance, while the product view splits roughly into Fire Service, Industrial PPE and Detection.

Fire Service is the largest product grouping. It covers self-contained breathing apparatus, where the G1 SCBA is the flagship and received NFPA approval for its latest generation in 2025, along with fire helmets and firefighter protective apparel. Helmets run under two brands with a geographic split: Cairns in North America, including the traditional 1044, the modern 360S and the 1836 with embedded RFID for asset tracking, and Gallet across the international segment. Turnout gear comes through two subsidiaries, Globe in the Americas and Bristol Uniforms in the UK and international markets. FireGrid is the software layer tying inventory management and connected devices together.

Detection is the instrument business and covers fixed gas and flame detection, gas analysis and portable gas detection instruments. The ALTAIR range is the best known portable line, with the connected ALTAIR io 4 wearable driving much of the recent growth. This is the part of MSA that has the clearest read-across to military and government users, since fixed and portable gas detection is standard equipment on bases, depots, ships and chemical demilitarisation sites.

Industrial PPE and other covers head protection and fall protection. The V-Gard hard hat has been a bellwether product for over fifty years, and the newer V-Gard H2 safety helmet addresses lateral impact rather than just top impact. Fall protection sits alongside it, covering harnesses, lifelines and engineered fall arrest systems.

The defense-relevant thread is narrower than the company's overall size suggests. MSA bought the French helmet maker Gallet after US Special Operations Command showed interest in a predecessor of what became the Modular Integrated Communications Helmet and then the Advanced Combat Helmet, and MSA held the second US Army ACH contract in 2005. It later sold its North American ballistic helmet business to Revision Military, keeping Gallet in Europe. Gallet still produces ballistic and tactical helmets, including the TC 800 PE series in polyethylene for combat, airborne, counter-terrorism and special operations use, alongside its aviation and firefighting lines. Beyond that, military customers buy MSA the same way industrial ones do: breathing apparatus, detection instruments and head protection.

The company has grown by acquisition as much as by product development, folding in helmet, apparel and fall protection businesses and then running them under their own established brands rather than absorbing the names. That is why the portfolio reads as a collection of well-known marques instead of one house identity. For a procurement officer the practical point is that MSA is a catalogue supplier with deep distribution, not a programme contractor.
