Nammo

Nammo formed in 1998 when Norway, Sweden, and Finland folded their national ammunition and propulsion industries into one Nordic group, and the company has grown into one of the wider world's specialty ammunition suppliers even though it stays largely out of the public eye. It organizes around four business units. Small and Medium Caliber Ammunition covers everything from 5.56mm rifle rounds to 12.7mm heavy machine gun ammunition, produced for NATO militaries and sold commercially for sport shooting and hunting, a civilian revenue stream that helps smooth out the cyclical nature of defense budgets. Large Caliber Systems makes artillery and mortar ammunition, medium-caliber cannon rounds in calibers like 25mm and 30mm, and shoulder-launched weapons, most notably the M72 LAW, a disposable anti-armor rocket that has stayed in production and in service with dozens of militaries since the 1960s because it remains cheap, light, and effective against lighter armor.

Nammo also builds the M141 Bunker Defeat Munition for US forces. Aerospace Propulsion is where Nammo's work gets less visible but arguably more technically demanding. The unit makes rocket motors and propulsion systems for missiles including the IRIS-T short-range air-to-air missile, the AIM-120 AMRAAM, the Naval Strike Missile, and the Penguin anti-ship missile, and it has moved into space propulsion, supplying separation rocket motors and the P120 booster igniter for the Ariane 6 and Vega launch vehicles used by the European Space Agency. Nammo also builds small monopropellant thrusters for satellite maneuvering and has worked with ESA on a sounding rocket program called Nucleus and on early development of the Heracles lunar lander engine.

Commercial Ammunition, the fourth unit, sells sporting and hunting ammunition under several Nordic brands, a business with its own customer base that happens to share factories and raw materials expertise with the military side. Ownership mirrors the company's founding logic: the Norwegian state, through its Ministry of Trade, Industry and Fisheries, holds 50 percent, and Finland's Patria holds the other 50 percent, which in turn ties Nammo's fortunes to Patria's own mix of state and Kongsberg ownership. Nammo employs around 3,100 people across some 27 production sites in a dozen countries, a wide manufacturing footprint that reflects decades of consolidating smaller national ammunition plants under one roof rather than building new capacity from scratch. As European militaries rebuild ammunition stockpiles depleted by the war in Ukraine, Nammo has become one of the more closely watched suppliers in the region, expanding production lines for 155mm artillery shells and other high-demand calibers.
