Navantia

Navantia is Spain's state-owned naval shipbuilder, created in 2005 when the military shipbuilding assets of the old IZAR Group were split off into a dedicated company wholly owned by SEPI, the Spanish government's industrial holding arm. It operates yards at Ferrol, Cadiz, and Cartagena, with corporate headquarters in Madrid, and it is organized around four broad areas: naval defense construction, systems and combat integration, diversification into civil and renewable-energy work, and through-life services. The naval defense line covers the full range of Spanish Navy shipbuilding. The F-100 class frigates, built around the Aegis combat system, were Navantia's breakthrough export product and formed the design basis for South Korea's Sejong the Great-class destroyers and Norway's Fridtjof Nansen-class frigates, both built under license or technology transfer.

The company is now developing the F-110, a next-generation frigate intended to replace Spain's older Santa Maria-class ships. On the submarine side, the S-80 program is building four next-generation diesel-electric submarines with air-independent propulsion for the Spanish Navy, a program that ran years behind schedule after a well-publicized buoyancy design problem before recovering. Navantia also builds the BAM offshore patrol vessel family, used by Spain and exported to Venezuela and Australia, along with amphibious assault ships and fleet auxiliaries. The systems division supplies combat management systems, sonar, and integration work for its own hulls and for other navies' vessels, giving Navantia a role beyond pure shipbuilding in the naval electronics space.

Diversification has become a bigger part of the story recently: the company builds offshore wind substructures and other marine renewable-energy infrastructure, a business it has leaned into as European governments push offshore wind investment alongside naval spending. Navantia's international footprint expanded significantly with its selection to build logistics support ships for Australia and its participation in Australia's future frigate competition through Navantia Australia, and in 2025 the company acquired Harland & Wolff, the historic Belfast shipbuilder, adding roughly a thousand UK-based employees and new yard capacity that positions Navantia to bid more directly into British and allied naval programs. The acquisition also gave Navantia a foothold in the UK's Fleet Solid Support ship competition. Employing close to six thousand people directly in Spain before the Harland & Wolff deal, Navantia remains fully state-owned, with no plans for a public listing, reflecting the Spanish government's view of naval shipbuilding as a strategic sovereign capability rather than a commercial business to spin out, even as the company increasingly competes for export contracts against listed rivals like Fincantieri and TKMS.
