NEC Corporation is a Tokyo IT and network house with a defense and space business bolted to one side of it. The group was founded in 1899, reported consolidated revenue of roughly 3.42 trillion yen for the year to March 2025, and employs more than 100,000 people. Two reportable segments carry nearly all of that. IT Services covers system integration, consulting, maintenance, outsourcing and cloud services sold mostly to Japanese government bodies, banks, carriers and manufacturers, and it is the larger of the two by revenue. Social Infrastructure holds the part a defense buyer cares about: core network infrastructure, mobile base stations, optical transmission, submarine cable systems, and the aerospace and national security work NEC performs for the Japan Ministry of Defense. A residual Others category covers the rest of the group. Revenue slipped slightly in FY2025 after Japan Aviation Electronics was deconsolidated, while both main segments grew.
Radar is the spine of the defense portfolio. NEC developed the J/FPS-7 fixed three-dimensional air surveillance radar operated by the Japan Air Self-Defense Force, and the transportable J/TPS-102 three-dimensional radar used for airspace monitoring by ground and air units. Underwater, the company has supplied sonar to Japanese submarines and surface ships for decades, and it has begun adapting that sonar work to civil undersea drones. NEC is a major subcontractor on the Advanced Combat Infantry Equipment System, the JSDF soldier modernization effort, where it supplied a small uncooled infrared camera for the helmet and the data distribution that lets one wearer pass imagery and position to another and to command elements. Satellite communications terminals for the Ground Self-Defense Force, command networks hardened against electromagnetic and digital interference, and long-running maintenance contracts round out the defense side. The unit has been hiring hard against Japan's defense budget expansion, adding 750 staff in the year to March 2025.
Space is a separate and older line. NEC builds satellites and satellite subsystems for the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency and export customers, anchored on the NEXTAR modular bus family. It built ASNARO-1 and the radar-imaging ASNARO-2 on the NEXTAR NX-300L platform, and it manufactured the Hayabusa2 asteroid sample return spacecraft, a 600 kilogram machine that reached Ryugu and returned material to Earth. Ground segment equipment and satellite components go out under the same banner. Biometrics is the third pillar and the one NEC is best known for outside Japan: the Bio-IDiom portfolio and the NeoFace face recognition engine, sold to border agencies, police forces and airports, including a version able to match faces through medical masks. Buyers should size the company honestly. Defense and space are a modest slice of a very large IT company, most customers are Japanese government entities, and export activity is constrained by Japanese policy rather than by capability.
