KNDS France

France's armored vehicle and artillery maker, half of the Franco-German KNDS group.

//Overview

KNDS France, known for most of its history as Nexter and before that as GIAT Industries, is the French half of Europe's biggest land-systems group and the manufacturer behind France's main battle tank and its most exported artillery piece. The company's roots go back to 1973, when the French state consolidated its state-owned arsenals into GIAT Industries, a fully nationalized manufacturer that spent decades restructuring before renaming itself Nexter in 2006 and turning a sustainable profit. In 2015, Nexter merged with Germany's Krauss-Maffei Wegmann to form KNDS, a Franco-German holding structure jointly owned by the French state and KMW's private German owners, and in 2024 Nexter formally adopted the KNDS France name as the two national businesses moved toward a single shared brand. It is headquartered in Versailles, employs roughly 3,700 people, and Germany joined France as an equal shareholding partner in the KNDS parent that same year, a milestone toward the dual stock listing KNDS has said it is targeting for 2026.

The Leclerc main battle tank is the company's flagship platform, developed through the late 1980s and 1990s and still the backbone of the French Army's armored force, alongside export sales to the United Arab Emirates. The CAESAR 155mm self-propelled howitzer, a wheeled gun system mounted on a truck chassis rather than a tracked hull, has become the company's biggest recent commercial and reputational success, with France sending large numbers to Ukraine and export orders from countries including Denmark, Belgium, the Czech Republic, and Indonesia driving a genuine production surge. The VBCI wheeled infantry fighting vehicle equips French mechanized infantry and has been exported to Cyprus and Argentina. Beyond those headline platforms, KNDS France manufactures a wide range of ammunition, including 120mm tank rounds, 155mm artillery shells, and 40mm grenades, work that has taken on new importance as NATO militaries rebuild depleted ammunition stocks.

It also builds the Titus wheeled armored vehicle for export markets and weapons stations and remote turret systems, and it has been developing the RAPIDFire naval and land-based rapid-fire gun system for short-range air and counter-drone defense, alongside continued work on next-generation land systems under the joint Franco-German Main Ground Combat System program intended to eventually replace both the Leclerc and Germany's Leopard 2. As part of KNDS, the company now coordinates closely with its German sister company on shared programs and future platforms, even as it continues producing and supporting its existing French product lines under national contracts and export orders, a transition still very much in progress as the group works toward operating under one shared identity.
