German builder of multi-laser metal powder bed fusion machines for aerospace, space, defense, energy and tooling, now a wholly owned Nikon company.
Nikon SLM Solutions builds selective laser melting machines in Luebeck on Germany's Baltic coast. The technical lineage goes back to laser fusion research carried out in the late 1990s by F&S Stereolithografietechnik, Trumpf and the Fraunhofer Institute for Laser Technology. The operating company was founded in 2006, listed on the Frankfurt Stock Exchange in 2014, and was taken over by Nikon in a deal valued at around 622 million euros. The squeeze-out completed on 1 September 2023, the shares were delisted, and the business was rebranded as Nikon SLM Solutions. It employs more than 650 people.
The product line is narrow by design and aimed squarely at the top of the metal additive market. The flagship NXG XII 600 carries twelve 1 kW lasers over a 600 by 600 by 600 mm build envelope and is marketed as roughly twenty times faster than a single-laser machine. The NXG 600E extends the same architecture to a 1.5 metre build height, which matters for rocket components, large engine cases and structural parts that would otherwise have to be split and joined. Below those sit the SLM 500, a four-laser production machine with around 50 litres of usable volume, and the SLM 280 2.0 and SLM 280 PS, smaller frames used for qualification work, research and lower-volume production. Materials qualified on the platforms include aluminum, titanium, nickel alloys, cobalt alloys, copper, steel and niobium.
The customer list is the clearest indicator of where the company sits. NASA, Boeing, Airbus, Rolls-Royce, Safran and Honeywell all appear on it. GKN Aerospace ordered two NXG XII 600 systems in 2023, one running Inconel 718 and one running Ti-6Al-4V, to industrialise additive parts for aero engine work. Safran expanded its additive manufacturing campus with a second NXG XII 600. Valiant Products took an NXG XII 600 aimed at aerospace, defense and energy parts, with an option for the extended 1.5 metre Z axis. Veeco bought one for semiconductor component production, and Hypermetal added a system for contract production. The company has also moved to build NXG XII 600 machines in the United States, which lowers the friction for American defense and space customers.
Nikon SLM Solutions names aerospace, defense, space, mobility, energy, tooling and research as its markets. In practice defense and space work tends to arrive through primes and tier one suppliers rather than directly, because the machines produce engine, propulsion and structural hardware that those companies then qualify into their own programs. Under Nikon the business sits alongside the parent's optics, metrology and precision engineering operations, and Nikon has been explicit about treating digital manufacturing as a growth line rather than a side bet.
The honest framing is that this is a machine tool company with unusually deep process knowledge in multi-laser melting, not a defense contractor. Its relevance to the sector is that the largest and fastest laser powder bed machines available today are a bottleneck technology for propulsion, hypersonics and large structural additive work.
