North American Rescue

North American Rescue started in 1996 out of the Greer, South Carolina area, founded by military medics who kept running into gaps between what combat medicine actually required and what was commercially available at the time. That origin still shows in how the company organizes itself, less around product categories and more around the people who use its gear: military, law enforcement tactical medical support, fire and EMS, and increasingly outdoor recreation and general public preparedness. Its best-known product is the Combat Application Tourniquet, usually shortened to C-A-T, a windlass tourniquet with the company's signature red tip that has been the official issue tourniquet of the U.S. Army since 2005. It is now in its seventh generation, refined over the years with a more durable windlass and a free-moving internal band meant to apply even pressure around the limb. Beyond the tourniquet, North American Rescue has built out a fairly complete kit for treating penetrating trauma in the field.

Its Hyfin Vent Chest Seal addresses sucking chest wounds by letting trapped air vent out while keeping the wound sealed, a design meant to prevent the wound from turning into a tension pneumothorax. The company also distributes and packages QuikClot Combat Gauze, the hemostatic gauze recommended by the Committee on Tactical Combat Casualty Care for wound packing, inside its own kits rather than developing a competing hemostatic agent from scratch. Its Hypothermia Prevention and Management Kit addresses a threat that is easy to overlook next to bleeding and airway problems but kills trauma patients on its own, insulating and warming casualties who are especially vulnerable to hypothermia after blood loss. On the kit side, the company's Individual First Aid Kits, along with more specialized variants like the Lumbar First Aid Kit worn on a belt and various compact 'mini medic' kits, are built around the same core priorities taught in Tactical Combat Casualty Care: stop the bleeding, secure the airway, treat the chest, prevent shock. Training is a real part of the business too, not an afterthought.

The company's TOMManikin trauma simulators are used to teach tourniquet application, wound packing, and chest seal placement under time pressure, which matters more for this kind of equipment than for almost anything else a soldier carries, since it is only useful if it can be applied correctly in a matter of seconds. North American Rescue was acquired by Henry Schein, the dental and medical distribution company, in 2019, giving it a much larger parent with existing government and institutional sales relationships. It remains a private operating subsidiary rather than a standalone public company. For a directory built around defense suppliers, North American Rescue is a useful example of a company whose products rarely make headlines but which sits on the packing list of essentially every deployed U.S. service member.
