Nova Systems sells judgement rather than hardware. Founded in Adelaide in 2000 as Nova Aerospace by Jim Whalley and Peter Nikoloff, two ex-military engineers, it has grown to more than 850 people working from Australia, New Zealand, the United Kingdom, Ireland, Norway and Singapore, and it remains Australian owned and controlled. Revenue sits in the region of 140 million dollars. The company describes itself as one of the largest Australian owned defence and security businesses, and it holds a position no foreign-owned competitor can hold: the only wholly Australian owned Major Service Provider to the Department of Defence Capability Acquisition and Sustainment Group, a panel arrangement the company markets as Team Nova.
Test and evaluation is the founding discipline and still the centre of gravity. Nova flight tests aircraft and modifications, certifies changes, and runs systems assurance work for customers who need an independent opinion on whether a capability actually does what the contract says. It operates a Test and Evaluation Centre of Excellence bringing defence, industry and academia together around joint force evaluation. Around that sits complex systems engineering: requirements definition, architecture, safety cases, airworthiness and regulatory support, and the aircraft modification design work that follows. Electromagnetic warfare systems engineering is a named capability, as is launch safety and regulatory support for space activity, an area Australia has had to build almost from scratch as a launch nation.
The second half of the business is digital. Nova builds software and mission systems, integrates sensors and data feeds, and applies artificial intelligence and machine learning to threat detection and decision support, along with modelling, simulation and geospatial situational awareness products. Integrated and autonomous operations and cyber assurance round out the list. Markets extend past defence into energy and utilities, communications and transport, where the same assurance methods apply to safety-critical infrastructure. The governance reflects a firm that has outgrown its founders: Jim Whalley remains a founder and director while an independent board chair and a separate chief executive run the company. For a procurement officer, the useful framing is straightforward. Nova competes with the engineering services arms of the large primes and with specialist consultancies, it brings Australian sovereignty and security clearances as a differentiator, and it has no platform or product line of its own to protect when giving advice. That independence is the product. The international footprint followed customers rather than marketing plans. Norway came through work with the Norwegian defence establishment, the United Kingdom and Ireland through aviation certification and regulatory work, and Singapore through Asian defence and civil aviation clients. Growth has been organic and people-led, which sets a natural ceiling: the firm can only take on what it can staff with engineers who hold the right clearances and type experience. Buyers sizing a task should ask about named individuals and their availability rather than about corporate capacity.
