Orolia spent decades building itself into one of the best known names in resilient positioning, navigation, and timing, and since 2022 it has operated as Safran's Navigation & Timing division rather than as a standalone company. The lineage traces back to Spectracom, founded in Rochester, New York in 1972 to build precision time and frequency equipment for telecom networks and emergency call centers. A string of acquisitions under the Orolia name, including Skydel, Talen-X, and the McMurdo group of search and rescue brands, turned a timing instrument maker into a company that touches almost every part of PNT. The timing and synchronization line is still the core of the business. Its network time servers, GPS disciplined oscillators, and atomic clock modules sync telecom networks, financial exchanges, and military infrastructure that cannot tolerate drift, and the company says more than 20,000 of its time servers are deployed worldwide. SecureSync in particular has become a standard reference clock in facilities that need certified, tamper resistant timing.
GNSS simulation and testing is the second pillar, built around the Skydel software engine and the GSG line of simulators, including the GSG-7 and GSG-8. These systems generate realistic multi-constellation, multi-frequency satellite signals, including jamming and spoofing scenarios, so that receiver and navigation system manufacturers can test how their hardware behaves under attack before it ever leaves the lab. The SubWAVE product extends that testing and positioning work underground and indoors, where satellite signals don't reach at all. GPS protection is where the defense relevance sharpens. Anti-jam antennas, NAVWAR receivers, and newer products like the TIGR secure GPS receiver and the DRAGN guidance and navigation module are built for platforms operating where GPS signals are degraded or deliberately denied. Inertial navigation, including IMUs and the compact MS500 series, backs up satellite positioning when it drops out entirely, a capability that matters as much to a ship or a missile as it does to a survey vehicle.
Search and rescue rounds out the portfolio and predates most of the rest of it. Through the McMurdo, Kannad, and Sarbe brands, Orolia makes personal locator beacons, emergency locator transmitters for aircraft, and the mission control software that ties beacon signals back to rescue coordination centers. It describes this as an end to end chain rather than a single product, running from the distress signal itself through to the agency that dispatches help. As part of Safran, Orolia now sits inside a much larger aerospace and defense group, giving its navigation and timing lines access to broader avionics and space integration work than it had as an independent company. But the product lines and the brands that built its reputation, Skydel, SecureSync, McMurdo, and the anti-jam hardware, remain the backbone of what it sells into defense, aviation, and critical infrastructure markets around the world.
