Parrot SA

Parrot is the rare consumer electronics company that turned itself into a defence supplier and survived the transition. Henri Seydoux founded it in Paris in 1994 to build voice recognition and Bluetooth hands-free kits for cars, moved into toy and hobby quadcopters with the AR.Drone in 2010, and in 2017 abandoned the consumer market entirely to concentrate on professional micro unmanned aircraft. Seydoux remains chairman, chief executive and the principal shareholder of the company he started. The company has been listed on Euronext Paris since June 2006 under the ticker PARRO, employs more than 400 people, and generated 78 million euros of revenue in 2024, most of it outside France, with customers in more than fifty countries.

The defence turn came from an American contract. Parrot was selected by the US Department of Defense in May 2019 under its short-range reconnaissance effort and received roughly 11 million dollars, work that produced the ANAFI USA. That aircraft weighs well under a kilogram, folds into a pack, carries a 32x zoom electro-optical payload and a thermal sensor, and is designed so that flight data stays on the aircraft rather than being uploaded anywhere by default. It is now flown by military and government users across several NATO countries and in Japan. ANAFI Ai is the commercial sibling, built around 4G connectivity and autonomous photogrammetry flights for survey and inspection work, and ANAFI UKR is a 5G connected variant developed in response to demand from the war in Ukraine. Parrot's marketing leans on regulatory standing, with compliance to Blue UAS, NDAA and TAA rules and NATO codification, which is the qualification that actually decides whether a Western agency can buy a small drone at all.

Software is the second half of the business. The Parrot SDK, now at version 8, opens the airframes to third-party developers building custom mission applications, and Parrot.Cloud handles fleet accounts and data. Pix4D, the Swiss photogrammetry and geospatial processing house, sits in the group and turns drone imagery into measurable 3D models for surveying, construction and forensic work. The portfolio narrowed sharply in 2021, when Parrot sold the agricultural sensor maker MicaSense and the fixed-wing eBee manufacturer senseFly to AgEagle Aerial Systems, shedding the precision farming business to focus on security and defence. Manufacturing is split between the United States and South Korea, a deliberate hedge that keeps the company clear of Chinese supply chains while preserving volume flexibility. Parrot cannot match Chinese unit costs and does not try to. It sells provenance, data handling and the paperwork that makes a purchase legal, and the war in Ukraine has made that a considerably easier argument than it was back in 2019. Subsidiaries operate in Switzerland, the United States, South Korea, the United Kingdom, Australia, Japan, Germany and Spain.
