Parsons Corporation started in 1944 when Ralph M. Parsons founded an engineering firm in California, and it built its early reputation on large-scale infrastructure and industrial engineering before growing into a defense and security player over subsequent decades. The company now runs two reporting segments that on paper look unrelated but share the same underlying engineering discipline. Federal Solutions is the national security half, covering cyber and intelligence work, missile defense engineering, and what the company calls all-domain solutions spanning space, air, and ground systems, along with health and biosciences work for defense and federal health customers. Within that segment, Parsons has built out counter-drone and directed-energy capability, including DroneArmor for counter-unmanned aircraft defense and RADBO, a laser-based system used to disable unexploded ordnance and drones on airfields, technology it has supplied for use at military installations facing drone incursions.

It also does space situational awareness and space traffic coordination work, including its role supporting the Traffic Coordination System for Space, a next-generation platform meant to replace older space object tracking tools as orbital congestion grows. Critical Infrastructure, the company's other segment, covers transportation engineering, urban development, environmental remediation, water and wastewater systems, and large federal infrastructure projects, work that spans airports, bridges, and rail systems including the positive train control technology it deployed for Caltrain. This split matters because it means Parsons isn't purely a defense contractor in the way a missile maker is. A meaningful share of its revenue comes from civil infrastructure work in the US and abroad, particularly in the Middle East, where the company has operated for decades on major transportation and urban development projects, giving it geographic and sector diversification that pure-play defense companies lack.

On the security side, though, Parsons has increasingly positioned itself around emerging and cross-cutting mission areas rather than legacy platforms, emphasizing electronic warfare, C5ISR systems integration, cyber operations support, and space domain awareness as growth areas rather than traditional weapons manufacturing. The company went public in May 2019 on the New York Stock Exchange under ticker PSN, joined the S&P MidCap 400 in 2024, and moved its headquarters from Pasadena, California to Chantilly, Virginia in 2023, a relocation that put it closer to its primary national security customer base in the Washington DC region. It now employs more than 21,000 people working across more than 30 countries.
