Patria

Armored vehicles, mortar systems, aircraft MRO, and defense electronics.

//Overview

Patria traces back to a Finnish Air Force aircraft factory founded in 1921, and it took its current form in 1997 when several state defense industry holdings merged into one company. Today it runs across six distinct lines, and the vehicle business is the one most people recognize. The Patria AMV, an eight-wheeled armored personnel carrier, has sold to more than a dozen countries and is built under license in Poland as the KTO Rosomak. A newer six-wheeled variant extends the family down into lighter, more mobile formations. Sitting on top of those hulls, or on their own chassis, is Patria's armament line: the NEMO and AMOS turreted mortar systems, which fire faster and more accurately than towed mortars, plus the ARVE self-propelled howitzer developed for the Finnish Army.

The aviation side is older than the vehicle business and just as central. Patria performs maintenance, repair, and overhaul on fighter and transport aircraft for the Finnish and Swedish air forces, runs pilot training programs, and builds composite aerostructures, including wing components for the F-35 supply chain and final assembly and sustainment work on the NH90 helicopter for Nordic customers. A smaller but growing unmanned systems unit builds the ONE, SKY, and GEO drone families for reconnaissance and target acquisition. Patria's electronic systems group makes less visible but technically demanding products: the ARIS command and control suite, the MUSCL passive radar system that detects aircraft without emitting a signal of its own, and the WISPR counter-battery radar used to locate incoming artillery fire. A naval systems line supplies the SONAC mine countermeasures sonar and the SIGMA acoustic and magnetic signature measurement system used to check how quietly a ship moves through the water.

Training and simulation rounds out the portfolio, with simulators built around Patria's own vehicle and aircraft platforms. Ownership reflects Patria's role as a strategic national asset rather than a purely commercial company. The Finnish state holds 50.1 percent and Norway's Kongsberg Defence & Aerospace holds the remaining 49.9 percent, a structure set up in 2016 that ties Finnish and Norwegian industrial policy together. Patria also owns half of Nammo, the Nordic ammunition and rocket motor group, giving the two companies a shared stake in each other's fortunes even though they operate as separate businesses. With roughly 3,700 employees and revenue around 825 million euros in 2024, Patria is mid-sized by global defense standards, but its footprint across land, air, and sea systems, plus its role supplying NATO's newer Nordic and Baltic members, gives it outsized relevance in the region.
