Peraton
Space, intelligence, cyber, and mission IT for national security agencies.
Peraton is a relatively young name built quickly through acquisition by the private equity firm Veritas Capital, which formed the company in 2017 by buying Harris Corporation's government IT services division and rebranding it. What followed was a string of deals that turned Peraton from a mid-sized IT services provider into one of the largest privately held national security contractors in the country. The 2021 purchase of Northrop Grumman's IT and mission support services business, a roughly 3.4 billion dollar deal, brought in space ground systems and intelligence community work. The acquisition of Perspecta added a large book of Defense Department and federal civilian IT contracts, and an earlier purchase of Solers brought cyber and geospatial capability.
The combined company now organizes around a set of mission areas rather than product lines, reflecting its identity as a services and systems integration business rather than a hardware manufacturer. Space is one of its largest practices, covering satellite ground systems, flight dynamics and orbital determination, space situational awareness, and telemetry, tracking and control work for military and intelligence space programs, including an ongoing Space Force contract for orbital analysis services. Intelligence work spans signals and geospatial intelligence support for agencies including the National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency, where Peraton provides imagery science and testing infrastructure support. Cyber covers both defensive cyber operations for federal networks and increasingly offensive-adjacent mission support for military cyber commands.
The company's defense practice covers command and control, ISR, and mission support across the services, while its citizen security and health lines apply similar data and IT capability to homeland security and federal health agencies like the VA. Perhaps its highest-profile recent win is the FAA's Brand New Air Traffic Control System modernization contract, where Peraton was selected as prime integrator to help rebuild the aging US air traffic control infrastructure, a program with major public visibility given recurring air traffic control outages and staffing shortages. The company has also begun pushing into applied AI with Peraton[x], an enterprise AI platform aimed at giving government customers reasoning capability across mixed classified and unclassified data types. Headquartered in Reston, Virginia, Peraton remains privately held by Veritas Capital and employs more than 18,000 people, a scale that puts it firmly among the top tier of government services contractors even though, unlike Leidos or SAIC, it has never gone public.
