Polska Grupa Zbrojeniowa (PGZ)

Polska Grupa Zbrojeniowa, known internationally as the Polish Armaments Group, is the holding company the Polish government built in 2013 to pull its scattered state-owned defense manufacturers into one coordinated structure. Headquartered in Radom, PGZ now sits above more than fifty subsidiaries and stakes in dozens more, making it Poland's largest defense manufacturer and one of the bigger arms groups in Europe by employee count, with roughly twenty thousand people across the group. The organization splits its work into five broad areas: land systems, weapons and ammunition, command and communications systems, air, and naval. On land, the group's most visible product is the Rosomak, a licensed and locally adapted version of the Finnish Patria AMV wheeled armored personnel carrier, built by subsidiary Rosomak SA and now the backbone of Polish mechanized infantry.

Huta Stalowa Wola, another PGZ company, builds the Krab self-propelled howitzer, developed jointly with South Korea's Hanwha and fielded in large numbers by both Poland and Ukraine, along with the Borsuk infantry fighting vehicle now entering production to replace Poland's Soviet-era BWP-1 fleet. The weapons and ammunition arm includes FB Radom, maker of the MSBS Grot modular rifle family that has become the standard Polish infantry weapon, and a growing network of ammunition plants that the group has been rapidly expanding, backed by hundreds of millions of euros in government investment, to supply artillery shells to both the Polish military and Ukraine. Air defense is a particular focus given Poland's frontline position facing Russia and Belarus: PGZ companies build the Piorun man-portable air-defense missile, now exported to several NATO allies including the UK and the US Army's testing programs, along with the Poprad short-range air defense system and Pilicz radar-guided air defense sets that pair with it. The naval arm, centered on the Miecznik frigate program being executed with UK contractor Babcock, and shipyard subsidiaries handling coastal patrol vessels and mine warfare ships, is smaller than the land and munitions businesses but growing as Poland modernizes its Baltic fleet.

Command and communications systems, built through subsidiaries specializing in military radios, electronic warfare, and simulators, round out the portfolio, supplying the digital backbone that ties Poland's rapidly modernizing army together. PGZ is wholly owned by the Polish State Treasury, and the government has treated it explicitly as an instrument of both national defense and industrial policy, using PGZ contracts and joint ventures with foreign primes like Rheinmetall, Hanwha, and Lockheed Martin to build domestic production capacity as Poland pursues one of the largest defense spending increases, relative to GDP, of any NATO member.
