PLATH Group

Signals intelligence systems for strategic, land, naval and airborne users

//Overview

PLATH has been listening to radio traffic from Hamburg since 1954, when it started as C. Plath, and it remains family owned at a time when most of its peers have been absorbed into listed groups. Around 600 people work across the group, which counts roughly a dozen subsidiaries and offices in Hamburg, Gilching near Munich, Bern in Switzerland and Singapore. The company describes itself as an independent systems integrator rather than a manufacturer, which is an accurate distinction. It builds direction finders, receivers and antennas of its own, then assembles them with third party hardware into complete intelligence systems, and it has delivered more than 350 such systems to military and government customers worldwide.

The portfolio is organised by where the system sits. Strategic intelligence systems are the fixed installations, large antenna arrays and analysis centres run by national agencies to monitor high frequency traffic across continental distances. Land based mobile systems put the same capability into vehicles and shelters for tactical formations that need to move. Naval systems go into surface ships and submarines, where space, power and antenna placement are all constrained, and PLATH has been a regular presence in European submarine construction discussions for that reason. Airborne systems cover manned aircraft and podded fits. A newer multi-domain autonomous line extends the reach to uncrewed platforms, with work on meshed electronic warfare payloads carried by drones so that a dispersed network of small emitters and receivers can geolocate a target more precisely than a single station ever could.

Underneath the domains sit the Smart Solutions, the products that carry the company's actual engineering. NOMAD is a fully automatic high frequency system for surveillance, direction finding, localisation and signal analysis, designed to run without a large operator crew and deployable either standalone or bolted onto an existing installation. NEMO is the compact tactical family, integrated into vehicles, shelters, ships, submarines and aircraft, doing automatic signal detection, wideband direction finding, recording and automatic decoding. PULSAR handles the hard end of the problem, analysing and recording continuous and discontinuous broadband signals and emitters. In 2021 the group carved out PLATH Signal Products as a separate subsidiary to sell the underlying components, its direction finders, receivers and antennas, to other system integrators, including firms it had previously competed against for whole systems. That was a deliberate strategy shift. The group also runs training, engineering support and analyst services around the hardware, since a signals intelligence installation is only as good as the people reading its output, and it markets the same competences into telecommunications regulators and spectrum monitoring agencies alongside the defence and intelligence customers.
