Proengin is a small French company with an unusually narrow and unusually deep specialism. It was founded in Saint-Cyr-l'Ecole in 1972 by Pierre Clausin as a contract research house working for the French defence ministry on optics, electronics, micro-mechanics and hydrogen handling. In 1984 the ministry went looking for a new chemical warfare agent detector and picked Proengin's proposal to build one around flame spectrophotometry. Everything the company sells today descends from that decision.
The approach is worth explaining because it sets Proengin apart from most of the detection market. Instead of matching a sample against a stored library of known agents, a flame spectrometer burns the sampled air and reads the light emitted by the elements present. Anything carrying sulphur, phosphorus, arsenic or an HNO bond shows up, which means impure, degraded, homemade and otherwise unknown compounds are detected rather than missed. There are no filters, no calibration routine and no user settings, which keeps training demands low.
The first product family, the AP2C, went into wide use during the 1991 Gulf War and was later adopted by the United Nations Special Commission for chemical disarmament inspections in Iraq. Its successor, the AP4C, is the current core of the range. The handheld AP4C is joined by the AP4C+, the vehicle-mounted AP4C-V, the fixed-site AP4C-F for continuous monitoring, and the AP4C-FB and AP4C-VB, which add biological detection to fixed and vehicle installations. The S4PE and S4PF are lighter portable units aimed at first responder teams. On the biological side the company has added the AP4B and the MAB.
Because flame spectrometry needs a hydrogen supply and periodic verification, Proengin also builds the support equipment its customers need in the field and in the workshop. That includes the multigas bench, the mini bench and the refilling bench for hydrogen cartridges, along with carrying sets, tripods and a headspace sampler kit for liquid and solid samples. The SIMTAC and AP2C/AP4C Simtoolkit simulant sets let units train with realistic detector responses without live agent.
Customers split across four groups the company names itself: military and dedicated CBRN forces, civil first responder teams, vehicle and naval platform integrators, and critical infrastructure operators. Detectors are fitted to armoured vehicles, warships, airports, government buildings and major public events. Proengin puts its installed base at more than 19,000 detectors across roughly 70 to 75 countries. Support is delivered through a distributor network, a maintenance organisation and the Proengin Academy training programme, and a US sales and service subsidiary operates from Fredericksburg, Virginia.
Ownership sits with French private equity. Capital Export backed the company first, and in 2021 Qualium Investissement came in as majority shareholder with Capital Export reinvesting alongside. Headcount is around 100. For a firm of that size the export reach is unusual, and it reflects the fact that very few manufacturers anywhere have kept a flame spectrometry product line in continuous production for four decades.
