PT Pindad (Persero)

PT Pindad is Indonesia's state-owned land systems and munitions manufacturer, based in Bandung in West Java with major facilities at Turen near Malang and an office in Jakarta. Its lineage runs back to 1808 and the Dutch colonial Constructiewinkel artillery workshop, through Japanese occupation and Indonesian independence, with the Pindad name adopted in 1962 and the present state limited company established in 1983. It employs roughly 2,500 people and is wholly owned by the Indonesian state. Since 2022 it has been a member of Defend ID, the defence industry holding grouped under PT Len Industri alongside PT Dirgantara Indonesia, PT PAL Indonesia and PT Dahana, where Pindad carries the land platform and munitions role.

Small arms are the oldest and highest-volume line. The SS1 assault rifle, licence-derived from the FN FNC, and the indigenous SS2 that succeeded it equip the Indonesian armed forces and police, and both have competed successfully in international military marksmanship events, which has done a good deal for the company's export credibility. The catalogue extends to pistols in the P1 to P3 and G2 series, submachine guns, sniper rifles and mortars. Ammunition is a business in its own right, covering small and medium calibres from 5.56 mm through 7.62 mm to 12.7 mm and larger natures, produced mainly at Turen.

Armoured vehicles are where Pindad has grown most visibly. The Anoa 6x6 armoured personnel carrier is the flagship and has served with Indonesian contingents on United Nations peacekeeping deployments, with a new Anoa 3 revealed in 2025. The Komodo 4x4 covers the lighter tactical and command roles, and the Badak 6x6 fire support vehicle carries a 90 mm turret. The Harimau medium tank, developed jointly with the Turkish firm FNSS from the Kaplan MT design, entered Indonesian Army service with first deliveries handed over in recent years, and an armoured personnel carrier variant of the same hull was unveiled in 2025. The Maung 4x4 light tactical vehicle and its MV3 developments, including a protected limousine variant produced at presidential direction, have become the company's most visible product domestically.

Beyond defence, Pindad runs a genuine industrial business that is easy to overlook. It makes heavy equipment and excavators, rail infrastructure components, industrial machinery and forgings and castings, and offers mining and industrial services. During the COVID-19 pandemic it designed and distributed ventilators to Indonesian hospitals, which says something about how the manufacturing base is used. The company also lists cyber security offerings among its services.

The strategic frame is import substitution. Indonesia has spent two decades trying to move from buying foreign equipment to building it domestically under licence and then independently, and Pindad is the instrument for that on the land side. Most of its output goes to the Indonesian armed forces and police, with export sales to regional and African customers on a smaller scale.
