Rafael Advanced Defense Systems

Air defense, precision missiles, active protection, and naval systems from Israel's state-owned developer.

//Overview

Rafael traces back to 1948, when Israel's fledgling defense ministry set up a research and development arm known as the Science Corps. It became a formal government-owned company in the early 2000s and today employs roughly 10,000 people out of Haifa and Kiryat Bialik, organized into three main divisions: Missiles and Network Centric Warfare, Ordnance and Protection, and Manor, its advanced defense technologies unit. The company is best known abroad for Iron Dome, the short-range rocket interceptor developed with the Israeli Air Force and later co-produced with an American partner, but that system is really just the most visible piece of a much wider air defense family. David's Sling handles the medium-to-long-range tier, SPYDER covers mobile short and medium-range air defense for export customers, and Iron Beam, a high-energy laser weapon now moving toward operational use, is meant to bring down the cost of intercepting drones and rockets to a fraction of what a missile costs.

Drone Dome extends that counter-UAS work with detection, jamming, and both soft-kill and hard-kill options against small unmanned aircraft. On the munitions side, Rafael builds the Python air-to-air missile family, the Spike anti-tank guided missile line now fielded by dozens of militaries worldwide, the Popeye air-to-surface missile, and Sea Breaker, a longer-range precision strike missile usable from ships, aircraft, or ground launchers. Its Spice guidance kits turn unguided bombs into precision weapons, and the ROCKS family extends that concept to stand-off glide munitions. Protection is its own specialty: the Trophy active protection system, which detects and destroys incoming anti-tank rockets before they reach a vehicle, has been adopted by the US Army for its Abrams tanks and by several other militaries, and a naval variant called C-Dome adapts the Iron Dome interceptor for shipboard defense.

Rafael also makes remote weapon stations, including the Samson and Typhoon lines used on vehicles and vessels, and the Protector unmanned surface vessel for harbor security and maritime patrol. Electronic warfare and cyber round out the portfolio through systems like Sky Shield and C-GEM, aimed at protecting aircraft and ground forces from radar and missile threats. The company reported roughly $4.85 billion in revenue for 2024 against an order backlog that had grown to record levels, driven heavily by sustained combat use of Iron Dome and Trophy and by growing export interest from NATO and Gulf state militaries. Because it is wholly owned by the Israeli government, Rafael does not trade on any exchange, and it operates as both a domestic defense supplier and, increasingly, an exporter of combat-proven systems.
