Redwire Space

Redwire is a young company built almost entirely through acquisition. Formed in 2020 by private equity firm AE Industrial Partners out of a merger of Adcole Space and Deep Space Systems, it went public via SPAC in 2021 and then spent several years buying up specialist space hardware makers: Made In Space for in-orbit 3D printing, Roccor for deployable solar arrays and antennas, LoadPath for launch vehicle structures, Deployable Space Systems, Oakman Aerospace, and QinetiQ's space division in Belgium. The result is a company organized around two broad lines of business, Space Tech and, since a 2025 deal that reshaped the company, Defense Tech. On the space side, Redwire's best-known hardware is its Roll-Out Solar Array, a rollable composite-boom power system that has flown on the International Space Station under NASA's IROSA upgrade program and is scaled up to deliver 60 kilowatts for NASA's lunar Gateway station.

Its other space work spans avionics and sensors, spacecraft structures and mechanisms, RF systems and satellite payloads, and the Octopus line of ISR and electro-optical payloads. Redwire has also pursued in-space manufacturing and pharmaceutical research through its SpaceMD initiative, tested on-orbit refueling technology through the TETRA-5 demonstration, and flown very-low-Earth-orbit hardware under the OTTER program. It contributed to the European Space Agency's PROBA-3 formation-flying mission and to NASA's Artemis II crewed lunar flight, and it holds a role as a contractor on NASA's Commercial Lunar Payload Services initiative, alongside 3D-printing regolith research through its Redwire Regolith Print project and concept work on lunar excavation and transport rovers. The bigger shift came in mid-2025, when Redwire closed a roughly $925 million acquisition of Edge Autonomy, a maker of tactical unmanned aircraft including the Penguin and Stalker systems, whose drones have seen use in Ukraine as part of US military aid packages.

That deal turned Redwire into a genuine defense technology company rather than a pure space supplier, with Edge Autonomy's air vehicles now marketed alongside Redwire's satellite hardware as a connected set of platforms spanning ground, air, and orbit. The company reported around $304 million in 2024 revenue, still running at an operating loss as it integrates its acquisitions, and trades on the New York Stock Exchange under the ticker RDW. It is headquartered in Jacksonville, Florida, with additional sites across the United States and, following recent acquisitions, in Europe. Financially the company is still working through the growing pains typical of a firm built by acquisition, posting operating and net losses in 2024 even as revenue climbed, and investors will be watching closely to see how cleanly the Edge Autonomy integration goes given how much larger and more complex it made the company almost overnight.
