Reutech Radar Systems is a Stellenbosch radar house founded in 1987 and operating as a division of Reutech within the applied electronics arm of Reunert, the Johannesburg listed industrial group. It designs and builds sensors for three markets, defence, security and mining, and it runs its own research and development programme rather than licensing foreign designs. The defence catalogue is deep for a company of its size. Two-dimensional surveillance covers the X-band RSR 210N for smaller naval and coastguard vessels, the RSR 903 and RSR 905 ground surveillance sets built to pick pedestrians and slow movers out of heavy clutter, and the RSR 906 and stabilised RSR 906N for simultaneous air and surface detection. Three-dimensional systems run from the long-range RSR 430 through the RSR 610, a multi-role set that handles general surveillance, drone detection and weapon control support, to the RSR 936 and its stabilised naval variant. The four-dimensional RSR 420 and RSR 420N add target acquisition and self-defence roles in C-band, with the ground version fielded as a two-vehicle configuration whose mast-mounted antenna can be left unmanned. Around those sit specialised sensors, including the RTS 3200 FORT, a low probability of intercept frequency modulated continuous wave tracker that was integrated with the combat suite of the Valour-class frigate SAS Spioenkop, the RSR 150 for acquiring incoming projectiles such as rocket propelled grenades, the RIS 100 radar electronic support measures receiver, the RDS 180 hostile fire detection set, and the RFTS 200 flight test safety system. The RSR 650 and RSR 655 multi-function digital array radars are the company's next step, aimed at air defence, counter-fire acquisition, coastal surveillance and border work from one antenna face. Security uses the same technology in a different frame, pairing ground radars with cameras in a perimeter intrusion monitoring system for industrial sites and protected areas. Mining is the commercial half of the business and the reason Reutech rode out the lean years of South African defence procurement. Its movement and surveying radar measures slope movement in open-pit and open-cast mines in real time and in any weather, which is the practical basis for predicting a slope failure before it kills anyone, and it is supported by a sub-surface profiler for ground penetrating work. The first unit went to New Vaal Colliery in 2006, exports began to Chile that same year and Australia in 2007, and the installed base has since passed 150 units across more than 75 mines in over 25 countries, putting the company second worldwide in that niche. Sitting inside Reunert gives the radar business siblings in mining, communications and industrial solutions work, and a listed parent whose group headcount runs near 7,000 across all its arms. Domestic defence hopes have centred on a handful of named South African projects, among them Biro for patrol vessels, Chutney for mobile air defence radars and Syne for frigate upgrades, none of which has moved at the pace the industry wanted. Naval exports include the Royal Norwegian Navy, and domestic work has run through South African Army ground-based air defence and navy frigate programmes.
