Rheinmetall BAE Systems Land (RBSL)

RBSL is the vehicle that put armoured vehicle manufacture back into Telford. Launched in July 2019 as a joint venture between Rheinmetall and BAE Systems, with Rheinmetall taking the majority stake, it folded BAE Systems' UK combat vehicle business into a company that could also draw on German product lines. The result is a single British business holding both the design authority for a large part of the British Army's legacy armoured fleet and the manufacturing licence for its newest wheeled platform. Headquarters and the main factory are in Telford in the West Midlands, with further engineering sites near Newcastle at Washington, at Bristol and in Dorset.

Two programmes dominate the order book. RBSL is one of the two UK manufacturers building Boxer for the British Army's Mechanised Infantry Vehicle programme, an order running to more than five hundred vehicles across troop carrier, command, ambulance and specialist variants, with drive modules and mission modules assembled in Telford. The second is Challenger 3, the rebuild of 148 Challenger 2 hulls into a tank with a new turret, a 120mm smoothbore gun, new sights and an active protection system. Challenger 3 is led from Telford with heavy armour engineering support drawn from the Washington and Bristol sites, and it is the reason the company describes itself as the only business currently assembling main battle tanks in Britain.

The inherited BAE Systems portfolio is where the sustainment revenue sits. RBSL holds the support business for Trojan, the armoured engineer vehicle, and Terrier, the lighter combat engineer vehicle, along with Warrior infantry fighting vehicles, the AS90 self propelled howitzer and the British Army's military bridging systems. That work covers repair, overhaul, obsolescence management, safety case ownership and upgrade design rather than new build, and it runs across the whole in service fleet. Bridging in particular has export reach beyond the UK customer.

The company sits in an awkward but useful position for British procurement. Its German parent supplies product designs and supply chain depth, its British parent supplied the installed base and the site, and the joint venture itself carries UK design authority and UK build. That was the explicit policy intent when the deal was done, and RBSL has given written evidence to Parliament on armoured vehicle capability in that capacity. For anyone mapping the UK land supply chain, RBSL is the point where Boxer, Challenger 3 and the legacy tracked fleet all converge on one factory. The industrial consequences run wider than the company itself, because both flagship programmes carry deliberate UK content targets that pull hundreds of smaller suppliers into armour, drivetrain, electronics and fabrication work they would otherwise have lost when British tank building stopped. Whether that base holds past the current order book is the open question. Challenger 3 is a finite conversion of a fixed number of hulls, and Boxer deliveries will eventually taper, so the support and upgrade side inherited from BAE Systems is what gives the Telford site work between the peaks.
