Safran S.A.

Safran is a French aerospace and defense group built from a 2005 merger between the engine maker SNECMA and the electronics specialist SAGEM, and it traces its engineering lineage back to 1905, when the company Gnome began building some of the first rotary aircraft engines. Headquartered in Paris and listed on Euronext Paris under ticker SAF, Safran sits in the CAC 40 index and employs roughly 110,000 people worldwide, with the French state still holding a meaningful stake alongside a large employee ownership block, a structure that keeps it tightly linked to French defense policy even as most of its revenue comes from commercial aviation. Propulsion is the group's largest and best known business. Safran co-develops the CFM56 and newer LEAP turbofan engines with GE through their long-running CFM International joint venture, engines that power the majority of the world's narrow-body airliners, and on the military side Safran builds the M88 engine that powers the Rafale fighter and turboshaft engines for military and civil helicopters, along with propulsion for training and combat aircraft and drones.

That propulsion expertise extends to space, where Safran supplies rocket engine components for European launchers. The Aircraft Equipment, Defense, and Aerosystems segment is where the military-specific product lines live. Landing gear, wheels, and brakes for both civil and military aircraft come out of this segment, alongside fuel systems, onboard computers, and avionics. Its defense-focused Safran Electronics & Defense unit builds optronic and navigation systems that the company describes as a leading European position in air, land, and sea optronics, including the Euroflir family of gyrostabilized targeting and surveillance pods used on helicopters, drones, and patrol aircraft, with the higher-resolution Euroflir 410 equipping the Patroller drone in particular.

Patroller itself, a long-endurance tactical surveillance drone, was developed by Safran and selected by the French Army as the country's first certified tactical drone, and it has since been exported to Greece. Safran's navigation and guidance work includes inertial units like the Sigma family, used in artillery fire control systems such as the CAESAR self-propelled howitzer, and its soldier-systems legacy runs through the FELIN integrated infantry combat suite, originally developed by SAGEM before the Safran merger, which bundled optics, communications, and protective equipment into a networked kit for French infantry. A fourth Aircraft Interiors segment builds cabin seating and furnishings for commercial, regional, and business aircraft, a purely civil business that nonetheless helps fund the group's defense engineering. Because Safran's revenue mix skews heavily toward commercial aviation through CFM and its equipment businesses, the defense-specific share of the group is smaller than its total size suggests, but the optronics, navigation, and engine work that does serve defense customers is deep and largely without European peer at Safran's scale.
