SAIC

SAIC doesn't build weapons or aircraft. It integrates the software, networks, and engineering that let the government's own systems talk to each other, which makes it one of the less visible but more deeply embedded contractors in federal work. The current company was spun off in 2013 from what had been Science Applications International Corporation, which then renamed its remaining piece Leidos, but SAIC traces its institutional roots back to 1969 and the original SAIC founded by physicist J. Robert Beyster. Since the spinoff it has grown mostly through acquisition, buying Scitor Holdings for its intelligence-community footprint in 2015, Engility in 2018 to expand systems engineering and simulation work, and Unisys Federal in 2020 to add IT infrastructure and cybersecurity services across defense and civilian agencies.

In 2024 the company reorganized around five customer-facing groups: Army, Navy, Air Force and Combatant Commands, Space and Intelligence, and Civilian, a structure being further consolidated into three groups in 2026 to sharpen its focus on the Pentagon's biggest buyers. For financial reporting it still rolls up into two segments, Defense and Intelligence, and Civilian. The work itself spans enterprise IT modernization and cloud migration, cybersecurity operations, digital engineering and model-based systems design, data and artificial intelligence services, and the systems integration that ties large acquisition programs together over their full lifecycle. SAIC runs ground systems and simulation environments for space and missile-defense customers, supports command and control efforts like the Pentagon's Joint All-Domain Command and Control push, and has built AI-enabled tools such as automated claims-processing and decision-support software for both defense and civilian health agencies, part of a broader push across the company to bake artificial intelligence and quantum computing research into otherwise conventional IT modernization contracts rather than sell them as standalone products.

Its Civilian group, which now folds in health and state and local government work, serves agencies from NASA to the Department of Veterans Affairs. SAIC is headquartered in Reston, Virginia, employs around 23,000 to 25,000 people, and trades on the Nasdaq under the ticker SAIC as an S&P 400 company, reporting roughly $7.3 billion in annual revenue. Because it sells expertise and integration rather than hardware, its offerings read more like capability areas than named products, but the contracts underneath them run across nearly every major federal department, and the company's growth has tracked closely with the government's own shift toward cloud computing, zero-trust cybersecurity, and AI-assisted decision tools over the past several budget cycles.
