Saronic Technologies is an Austin, Texas startup building autonomous surface vessels for the US Navy and commercial maritime customers, founded in late 2022 by Dino Mavrookas, a former Navy SEAL, alongside a team drawn from robotics and defense technology backgrounds. The company's pitch is straightforward: the Navy needs far more hulls than traditional shipyards can build at traditional prices and timelines, and uncrewed vessels can fill that gap faster and cheaper than crewed ships while taking sailors out of the most dangerous or repetitive missions. Saronic's product line spans several vessel sizes built around that idea. The Corsair is a compact, high-speed uncrewed surface vessel designed for surveillance, escort, and rapid-response missions, and it gained public attention for what the company describes as the first known at-sea rescue carried out by an autonomous boat, recovering downed pilots in the Strait of Hormuz.
The Mirage is another uncrewed platform in the company's lineup, while the Marauder is a much larger medium uncrewed surface vessel, roughly 180 feet long, capable of more than 25 knots, a 5,400 nautical mile range, and payload capacity above 150 metric tons, putting it in a size class closer to a small crewed ship than a typical drone boat. Tying the vessels together is Echelon, Saronic's command-and-control software platform, which lets operators plan missions, monitor vessel status, and coordinate multiple autonomous boats from a shore or ship-based control station. What sets Saronic apart from many autonomous-vessel startups is that it has moved into shipbuilding infrastructure directly rather than relying entirely on contract manufacturers. The company is developing Port Alpha, a purpose-built shipyard in Brownsville, Texas, designed around high-rate production of autonomous vessels rather than the slower, more artisanal processes used at legacy naval shipyards, an approach intended to let Saronic scale hull production the way a factory scales any other manufactured product.
That manufacturing ambition has attracted substantial venture capital. Saronic reached unicorn status, a valuation above one billion dollars, by mid-2024, and continued raising large rounds afterward as investors bet on autonomous maritime systems becoming a durable category within Navy shipbuilding budgets, with reported valuations climbing into the billions of dollars through 2025 and into 2026 as the company closed additional funding to build out Port Alpha and expand its vessel programs. The company remains privately held and has not disclosed a public employee count, but it has grown quickly from its 2022 founding and has positioned itself as one of the most closely watched names in the broader push toward uncrewed and autonomous naval platforms, alongside a small set of other venture-backed maritime defense startups competing for the same Navy programs.
