Sarsilmaz Silah Sanayi A.S.

Pistols, infantry rifles, machine guns, sporting arms and armed robots.

//Overview

Sarsilmaz began in 1880 in Elazig, where Abdullatif Bey made and repaired flintlock rifles for a market that had barely changed in a century. The family stayed in the trade through three generations. The business moved to Istanbul in 1956, opened its first proper factory there in 1970, and in 2015 consolidated into an integrated plant at Beykoy in Duzce province that the company describes as one of the larger firearms manufacturing sites in Europe. It remains privately held and family led, with Latif Aral Alis as chairman since 2000, and it is the only private Turkish firm making military small arms, service pistols and sporting guns on the same site. That mix matters commercially. Civil and sporting sales smooth out the lumpy cadence of government orders, which is a problem most defence-only gunmakers never solve.

Pistols are the anchor. The SAR 9 striker fired family, launched in 2019 and since extended into Gen2, Gen3, Mete, CX, SP and SOCOM versions, won a run of Turkish state contracts, and more than 180,000 units went to the Turkish Land Forces, Naval Forces, Coast Guard and National Police between 2019 and 2022. Beside it sit steel frame designs with a longer pedigree, including the Kilinc 2000 built on a licensed CZ 75 pattern, the K series and P8, the B6 polymer line, the SR 38 revolver and the newer SAR 2023. Long guns run from the SAR 109T submachine gun, adopted by the Turkish Army in 2014 and later the first Turkish submachine gun bought by a United States police department, through infantry rifles including the SAR 56, the SAR 308 and the MPT 76 SH, to the SAR 556 MT, SAR 762 MT and SAR 127 MT machine guns. The 12.7 mm gun is fitted as the coaxial and commander's armament on Turkey's Altay main battle tank, which moved the company from small arms supplier to armoured vehicle subsystem supplier.

Sporting and hunting arms are a real segment rather than a sideline, covering over and under and semi-automatic shotguns sold under the Vertu, Magic, M204 and M212 names, plus rimfire and centrefire sporting rifles. The company also loads its own small arms ammunition across calibres from .22 LR through 9x19 mm and .45 ACP to 5.56x45 mm and 7.62x51 mm, which closes the loop between the guns and what feeds them. Newer work pushes past handheld weapons entirely into medium calibre weapon systems and the SARBOT armed unmanned ground platform, an armed robot built around the company's own machine guns. Sarsilmaz became the first certified research and development centre in its field under the Turkish industry ministry in 2015, runs SAR USA as its own American import and distribution arm rather than relying on a third party, and exports to somewhere between 78 and 80 countries depending on which year's figure you take. Distribution in the United States previously ran through European American Armory, and taking that channel in house in 2018 was the point at which the firm started behaving like a brand rather than a contract supplier. It is a small change on paper. In practice it is why Turkish pistols now sit on American gun counters under a Turkish name.
