Serco Group

Outsourced defense, justice, transport, and citizen services for governments.

//Overview

Serco began in 1929 as a UK subsidiary of the American broadcaster RCA, tasked with maintaining cinema sound equipment, and it is now one of the largest government outsourcing companies in the world, a long way from where it started. The company does not build weapons or platforms. Instead it runs the services that keep government operations functioning, working under contract across five broad sectors: defense, justice and immigration, health, transport, and citizen services, spread across the UK and Europe, North America, Asia Pacific, and the Middle East. In defense specifically, Serco operates across space, maritime, land, and air settings rather than any single domain, and its recent contract wins illustrate that spread.

In the UK it won an MoD contract to help service the Royal Air Force's Typhoon fighter fleet, work that sits alongside longer-running roles supporting military training, base operations, and equipment support for the British armed forces. In the United States, Serco holds a roughly 323 million dollar contract to upgrade defense infrastructure at Pituffik Space Base in Greenland, the US Space Force's northernmost installation, reflecting the company's substantial and growing North American federal services business alongside its UK operations. Historically Serco was part of AWE Management Limited, the consortium alongside Lockheed Martin and Jacobs that ran the UK's Atomic Weapons Establishment under contract from 2012 until the Ministry of Defence brought that work back under direct government control in 2021, an example of how Serco's defense portfolio has shifted over time as contracts come and go. Beyond defense, Serco runs immigration detention and prisoner escort services, operates and maintains rail and light rail systems including parts of London's Docklands Light Railway, provides clinical and non-clinical health services under contract to the UK's National Health Service, and manages a wide range of citizen-facing government functions from driving test centers to welfare-to-work programs.

The Middle East business specifically serves defense, transport, and healthcare customers in the Gulf region. Serco is listed on the London Stock Exchange, sits in the FTSE 250, and is headquartered in Hook, Hampshire. It employs more than 50,000 people across more than 20 countries, and its business model, winning long-duration, often unglamorous government service contracts and running them efficiently at scale, has made it one of the most durable names in public sector outsourcing even through periods of political controversy over the use of private contractors for public functions. The defense order book in particular has become an increasing focus for the company as European and allied governments expand military spending and look to industry to run more of the support functions behind that expansion.
