SES Space & Defense, known for years as SES Government Solutions before a 2022 rebrand, is the U.S. government and defense-focused arm of SES S.A., the Luxembourg-based satellite operator that runs one of the larger commercial fleets in the industry across both geostationary and medium-Earth orbits. The Reston, Virginia-based unit exists to translate SES's global satellite capacity into services that meet U.S. federal contracting, security, and operational requirements, functioning as the bridge between a European-headquartered satellite fleet operator and American military and intelligence customers who need domestic points of contact, compliant contracting vehicles, and integration support. The name change in 2022 followed one of the more significant acquisitions in the company's recent history, when SES bought DRS Global Enterprise Solutions from Leonardo DRS for roughly 450 million dollars. That business had spent years providing satellite communications services directly to the Defense Department and other military and intelligence agencies, and folding it into SES's government arm substantially deepened the company's existing relationships across the U.S. national security satellite market, which is part of why the rebrand to Space & Defense reflected a genuinely larger scope rather than just new branding.

The core technical differentiator SES brings to defense customers is multi-orbit connectivity. Where many satellite communications providers offer either geostationary bandwidth or a single non-geostationary constellation, SES operates both a traditional GEO fleet and the O3b and newer O3b mPOWER constellations in medium Earth orbit, which deliver meaningfully lower latency and higher throughput than GEO alone. For military users, that combination matters because different missions call for different tradeoffs. GEO capacity offers wide-area, persistent coverage well suited to fixed sites, while O3b mPOWER's lower latency suits time-sensitive applications like real-time video or beyond-line-of-sight command links from mobile and airborne platforms.

SES has demonstrated that flexibility publicly, working with Hughes Network Systems on live multi-orbit SATCOM connections to remotely piloted aircraft, letting a single airborne platform hand off between orbital layers depending on which offers the best link at a given moment rather than being locked into one satellite architecture for the length of a mission. The government and defense business operates as one part of SES's broader corporate structure, which also includes SES Media, focused on video distribution and broadcast services, and SES Networks, covering commercial data connectivity outside the defense space. SES S.A. itself trades on the Luxembourg Stock Exchange and Euronext Paris and counts the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg among its significant shareholders, a somewhat unusual ownership structure for a major satellite operator. Because SES Space & Defense operates as a business unit within that larger structure rather than a separately reported subsidiary, granular figures like its standalone headcount or founding date as a distinct entity are not independently published.
