Sierra Nevada Corporation started small, founded in 1963 out of a hangar at Reno's Stead Airport, and has stayed privately held since Fatih Özmen and Eren Özmen bought the company in 1994 and built it into a multi-billion-dollar national security contractor while retaining full ownership. SNC organizes its current work into two main areas, ISR, Aviation and Security, and Mission Solutions and Technologies, spanning aircraft modification, secure surveillance systems, and battlefield networking. Its aircraft business modifies and integrates surveillance and command aircraft rather than building airframes from scratch, work that produced the A-29 Super Tucano light attack and ISR aircraft used by multiple export air forces and the C-145A Skytruck used in special operations support roles.

The company's RAPCON-X is a rapidly reconfigurable aerial ISR platform meant to be adapted to different sensor payloads and missions quickly, and its M-28 Special Operations Multi-Role Aircraft is built around a rugged, modular airframe for austere-environment missions. SNC has also developed Gorgon Stare, a wide-area airborne surveillance system that can watch an entire city block simultaneously from an unmanned aircraft, and it holds a major role in the survivability and networking side of the US nuclear command structure through its Survivable Airborne Operations Center program, a roughly $13 billion Air Force contract awarded in 2024 to replace the aging E-4B doomsday-plane fleet. Its SNC TRAX software provides a certified command-and-control gateway supporting Joint All-Domain Command and Control concepts, letting different services and allied militaries share sensor and targeting data across domains.

The company employs approximately 5,000 people across more than 30 locations in the United States, United Kingdom, Germany, and Turkey, with several international subsidiaries including Deutsche Aircraft and Kutta Technologies feeding into its broader portfolio. SNC spun off its space technology work into a separate company, Sierra Space, in 2021, which now independently develops the Dream Chaser spaceplane and other orbital hardware, though the two companies remain under related ownership and occasionally collaborate. Sierra Nevada Corporation itself has stayed focused on aircraft, ISR, electronics, and national security technology rather than space, generating around $2.4 billion in reported annual revenue as of recent years, a figure that has grown substantially since with new Air Force and international contracts, including a Finnish Border Guard deal and a 2025 strategic agreement with Lufthansa Technik Defense that extends the company's aircraft sustainment reach into Europe.
